The Seattle music scene is the ideal backdrop for Cameron Crowe's chronicle of the lives of single twentysomethings in the 1990s. Linda (Kyra Sedgwick) and Steve (Campbell Scott) are both tired of the singles scene and meeting the wrong people. Just when they are each ready to give up and give in to being alone, they meet each other and begin the delicate process of dating. Steve's apartment complex is also home to his ex-girlfriend, Janet (Bridget Fonda), and Cliff (Matt Dillon), the lead singer of a rock band. Janet imagines that Cliff is her boyfriend while Cliff considers her one of a few casual acquaintances. Debbie (Sheila Kelley), who also lives in the complex, resorts to video dating in her attempt to meet men with humorous but disastrous results. Crowe's script captures the nuances of relationships and romance (as he did with teen love in 1989's SAY ANYTHING) and follows the rocky roads that relationships can take. Music is the other main character here, with live performances from Alice in Chains and Soundgarden, cameos by the members of Pearl Jam, and a soundtrack that also includes titles by Paul Westerberg and Mudhoney.

Director Cameron Crowe received much attention for the Oscar-winning Jerry Maguire starring Tom Cruise. But the former rock journalist — he wrote Fast Times at Ridgemont High based on his own experiences — had already made an equally interesting romantic comedy with this wonderfully funny look at love among Seattle's twentysomethings. Matt Dillon is the self-centred grunge rocker in love with Bridget Fonda, while Campbell Scott and Kyra Sedgwick are the couple too scared of commitment because of past experiences. They head an exemplary cast involved in the sort of dating rituals that recall the acerbic wit of early Woody Allen, but appealingly countered with a knowing and touching sweetness. Crowe's greatest strength is the way he focuses on those smaller moments in life that are rarely reflected in movies. Look out for cameos from Fonda's real-life partner Eric Stoltz (as a mime artist) and Mars Attacks! director Tim Burton (playing the director of a dating tape).

Singles is one of my all time favourite movies. Based around the Seattle grunge scene in 1992, Cameron Crowe's second film in the director's chair is one of the most under-rated love stories of the 90s. Singles tells the story of four main characters (played by Bridget Fonda (looking gorgeous, incidentally :)), Matt Dillon, Kyra Sedgewick and Campbell Scott) who have all been looking for love but have so far been unlucky. As the very likeable characters live out their more-off-than-on relationships, they are accompanied by a superb contemporary soundtrack including bands such as Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains and Mudhoney. Ex-music journalist Crowe really knows his stuff and chose the perfect songs for the perfect moments (something he would do again years later in Almost Famous). Singles is often sad but always funny. The dating agency video is one of the funniest moments of the movie and Fonda is a pleasure to watch throughout. If you liked Crowe's later movies (Jerry Maguire, Vanilla Sky) you will definitely love Singles but if you have never seen the movie before nor any Cameron Crowe, you should definitely give it a try. It's the pre-cursor to Friends and late-90s coffee house sitcoms and should have been a much bigger hit. Fans of the TV series Alias should also look out for a young Victor Garber in an uncredited, but very funny cameo role.

A little bit of everything
I defy anyone not to relate to at least 1 character in this film. I relate to pretty much all of them, but mostly Bridget Fonda's.
I can watch this film again and again, even just for the fabulous soundtrack and the gorgeous Matt Dillon.
The film is best descibed as a romantic comedy but it has so much more to offer. There are parts which will make you laugh, parts which bring a lump to your throat and parts that are just plain nice. It is idealistic in a sense that the main characters all have great friends, and are relatively happy but overall there is a real 'reality' to the film. And it's really funny!
People who have been through the wringer of relationships will be able to bond with this film! -
