Well acted, tense and enjoyable.By BugPowderDust (6 reviews) , 14 Oct 2012
[Highly rated reviewer]I really enjoyed it! Went to see it in the cinema, thinking that being surrounded by loads of people watching a horror film probably really isn't going to lend itself to being scared but... I was wrong.
This is a brilliantly acted film, the lead played by Ethan Hawke is done very well indeed. I think it occasionally goes for the cheap scare (like tense music that subsides slowly, then....BANG), but the soundtrack is very effective at ratcheting up the tension, and the Super8 footage is properly chilling.
Not sure what to make of the ending. I didn't dislike it, but felt the film's excellent build up was let down slightly.
Definitely recommend it if you like incredibly tense horror films.

swing and a missBy Spedro (46 reviews) , 27 Aug 2013An interesting premis which ultimately fails to deliver, or even be memorable - after five minutes I had forgotten all and slept soundly. The 'rules' of the supernatural element are poorly established and as we are left wondering who the man in the mask is it is evident that little ground work was done in the writing, instead utilising cheap cliches to ruin an ending which had the potential to offer this film some redemtion.
Good Film, Bad EndingBy Eiz (4 reviews) , 23 Aug 2013Acting was good and the storyline was good too. I found the footage from the Super8's quite freaky! Didn't rate the ending much though, a little disappointing after quite a tense storyline and atmosphere throughout the rest of the film.
had potentialBy manicchicken (7 reviews) , 19 Aug 2013yes there are a couple of 'jump' moments but as a whole absolute trash. Good potential with the storyline but I say again.... terrible!!
Not a classicBy SuperSaint (346 reviews) from Market Harborough , 18 Aug 2013But certainly worth a good watch. Kept me engaged with a few twists and turns to keep you wondering and waiting.
Takes Uncomfortable To Another LevelBy doc_joyed (1 review) , 18 Aug 2013It's been two hours since the film finished; I'm still sat on the edge of the sofa, my hands remain clammy, and I'm pretty sure a heart beating this fast for this long would raise many a medical eyebrow. This film, is fantastic. Yes, we're all used to the usual horror cliche's; the seemingly perfect family moving into a new home with a dark past, the uncovering of that past and the gradual decent of said family into psychological and physical turmoil from the evil they've unearthed. But you'd be making a mistake to pass on this film based on what you recognise as an already familiar plot. The story is incredibly engrossing, there's a perfect balance between tension and jump-out-of-your-seat scares, but what separates this film from many others of a similar sub-genre, is the relentless unease it executes. The macabre opening scene sets the tone of the distressing journey you're about to take, the experience heightened by a truly unsettling soundtrack. I love horror, and have seen so many in my time that it's taking more and more to scare me. This film however, frightened me. Watch this film, but only do so with company.
