A reminder of what a first rate actor Sir John Mills is and a likeable man too. An enjoyable DVD with JM discussing a few of his many films, and including some home movie family footage too. A reminder of the days when Britain had a film industry worthy of the name. A bit more depth would have been welcome and although rather a lightweight piece anyone over 40 and hopefully many younger should enjoy this not too taxing view.
This interesting look back at the career of one of our greatest actors is worth an hour of your time. Sir John has always been a home movie fan, and the snippets of his massive collection are fascinating and revealing.
He reached the peak of his field, and obviously had a great time meeting with the stars and travelling the world. Gladly this did not seem to affect him, and he comes across as an ordinary chap, with an extrordinary acting talent.
Some of his early 1930's dancing is exceptional, and perhaps he could have been the UK's answer to Fred Astaire! However the war came and the rest as they say is history, with films like "We Dive at Dawn", "I was Montys Double" and of course "Ice Cold In Alex" there is not much more to be said. The family interjections are revealing without being overly sentimental.
I agree with Sir David Attenboroughs take on his best film, but you'll have to rent the DVD to find out what that is! Recommended.
