  • Bogey rules.....but this slightly later film is not up to his 1940s standards

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Run-of-the-mill stuff by a director who thought he could cast Bogey as a nightclub owner and make another 'Casablanca'.

    Idiot LOL !

But it's still a Bogey film so no review of mine will give it less than the 3* mark----that would almost be like insulting one of the giants of the silver screen who left us with so many memorable moments and great films. A true legend----they don't make filmstars like Bogey anymore, sadly.

This isn't a bad film. Give it a go......but don't expect the great icon to be starring in something too special.

  • Even the best actors make mistakes

I've always been a bit of a Humphrey Bogart fan, but if I'd seen this film first I wouldn't have been.

It's a monotonous tale of a gunrunner in Syria (Bogart) and two French army officers with conflicting views of life, and it meanders its way through a complicated but very boring plot line with some very wooden acting of the sort rarely seen since the worst of British B movies in the 1930s. A stunning example of this came from leading actress Marta Toren, who seemed to have no chemistry with anybody.

Possibly Bogie's side step into production as opposed to just acting contributed something to this over long film, which does indeed have a few good moments, and I don't just mean the closing credits.

For gunrunners, look at Nicolas Cage in Lord of War; for the French army and Africa, see Days of Glory, but don't, if you can possibly help it, see this one, though it's quite good for insomnia.

Rather slow moving and infuriatingly so. YES it has the great humprey bogart in it but the plot and Lee J Cobb's stiff acting made it a comedy that I had not anticipated. Worth a look if you want to be ironic

It is an interesting film to watch although I couldn't really keep my attention to it even second time around For Bogart fans only.

This is not one of Bogarts better films, but if you like his films then rent it. Its worth a watch.
