Few shows combine maturity, depth and originality on TV. Six Feet Under, the HBO show concerning the lives of a family firm of funeral home owners, manages this in such a realistic, hard-hitting yet tender way that each new series is like meeting up with old friends, and it has quickly become my favourite TV program.
This series raises the already ludicrously high bar set by the previous seasons. It starts off leisurely enough, setting the scene, with Nate adjusting to his new life following surgery, Claire and David feeling their ways through changes in their own lives and Ruth still trying to hold everyone together.
But the tensions quickly build up: tempers fray; resentments rise to the surface; and a series of shocking developments propel the series into full-blown drama.
By the end, anyone not affected by the incredible storylines (acted, scripted and directed better than anything else on television) must surely be ready to check into the Fishers' funeral home already.
I simply can't recommend this enough.
Said it all already.
