LOVEFiLM Review Skyfall

  • 4 stars out of 5

    By Kaleem Aftab from LOVEFiLM

Daniel Craig cements his 007 capabilities, while Javier Bardem steps in as one of the great Bond villains.

  • Not your typical BOND Film, but a Very Different type of BOND Film

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Skyfall is almost as good as Casino Royal but definitely a lot better than Quantum of Solace, the plot makes more sense! Oh a difficult film to review. This isn’t your typical Bond Film. It’s perhaps the most unique and odd Bond film ever made out of all them. It doesn’t follow the same formula as the rest of the series. Yes, there’s Bond Girls, a Bond Villain and a great opening sequence, but the film, dare I say, is more about M (Dench – who is awesome) rather than about Bond himself.

After the opening sequence, it takes while to get into, about and 1 hour and a half, as soon as Bardem makes his appearance who is very good as the bad guy. It reminded me of how The Dark Knight went along, although Skfall not as cleverly accomplished as that film. The action scenes are decent, but not as memorable as past Bond films like Casino Royal. Craig is showing some Bond humour now, but not on a Roger Moore humour level, that will take a miracle! And Q returns, which great, but no invisible car, which is great too.

I like the ending, sombre but it allows Daniel Craig’s Bond to go in a new direction, which I look forward to seeing. Overall a very, very, different Bond Film, that is enjoyable to watch, but it isn’t perfect. Hopefully Chris Nolan will direct the next one and show his interpretation of the perfect Bond.

    Good effort 007.

If you cast your mind back to the beginning of Casino Royale where we first meet Craig's Bond - Skyfall is very much in that tone . A more straightforward secret agent movie than other Bonds , This movie is Craig at the height of his prowess and comfort in the role. Similar to Connery in Thunderball or Moore in Spy who Loved Me. In many ways this should have been the last Graig Bond - the end of a trilogy - it certainly plays that way. Skyfall presents a glamorous but lonely world where there are few winners and plenty victims and where time is a much an enemy as is the assassin's bullet Ably directed by Sam Mendes and excellent performances by all particularly Daniel Craig and Judy Dench and co stars Naomie Harris and Bérénice Marlohe. Is it my favorite Bond film ? no - although plenty of Bond elements are here and Craig fulfils his contractual obligation to show his muscles - there is a sense of repetition and a feeling you know what's coming next or what a character is about to say.. This is also the first Craig bond film to stray worryingly close to the Brosnan/Moore adherance to the fantastic ( helicopters appearing out of nowhere or villian trying to kill bond with a train for example - speaking of villians Javier Bardem's 'Silva' reminded me of Dirk Bogarde's villiain from Modesty Blaise ) All in all Skyfall a good film , one of the better Bonds and Craig's best Bond to date, However this film has wisely hinted at Craig's 'maturity' and i seriosuly think Craig should hang up his Walther PPK after the next film before he's reduced to doing all his stunts in fromt of dodgy backdrops and sharing love scenes with actresses far too .... shall i just say - 'A View to a kill' and leave it at that !

  • A Better Bond

Worth watching because it's less frenzied than 'Quantum of Solace'(daft title!daft film!) and the scenery is stunning. As usual, the plot stretches credulity to breaking point, but who cares(crazy finale) It was lovely to see Bond's old Aston Martin again, and in Glencoe too! Pity they didn't stick with the Scottish setting...You won't believe what they've done with the Moneypenny connection at the end...

I’ve watched ‘Casino Royale’ and didn’t realise that ‘Quantum of solice’ came before ‘Skyfall’ but it didn’t ruin the storyline- must rent ‘Quantum of solice’ next! Javier Bardem is excellent as the baddie (the bleached blonde hair is hilarious) – an ex agent who wants to kill M (the brilliant Judi Dench). Ralph Fiennes has definitely started to lose his hair after shaving it off so many times for Harry Potter but is great as M’s boss. The film has the usual stuff; exotic locations, beautiful women, car chases, gadgets and a race to stop the baddie exposing all the agents working for M on You Tube! My only gripe is this one doesn’t show Daniel Craig coming out of the sea with tight shorts on but you do see him shaving with his top off! Ben Whishaw must get a mention as he plays Q to geeky perfection and won a Bafta last night for his Richard II plays- an actor to watch out for.

An excellent Bond! Thoroughly enjoyed by myself and others I know who have seen the film. Many subtle references to past Bond films to watch out for. Would definitely recommend this one for anyone to watch, whether they have seen other films in the series or not.
