If you could live your life again, would you do it differently? That's the thought behind this lightweight British comedy directed by former Bread actor Peter Howitt, in which Gwyneth Paltrow plays out two different scenarios after she misses/doesn't miss a tube train home. In one reality she finds out her boyfriend is a two-timing louse, so she leaves him and gets a cute new haircut. In her parallel world the hair is long and boring — very much like her life. Paltrow handles her English accent with ease, and she's well supported by John Hannah and John Lynch. But because her life is far more interesting in one half than the other, the movie never quite gels.
"...Both storylines are compelling and engaging....With a pleasing balance of comedy and drama, SLIDING DOORS is an exceedingly original comedy-drama that appeals to both the romantic heart and the philosophical mind..."
A formally clever, occasionally charming romance; the problem is that instead of one not very interesting existence, we witness two.
This was 2 very enjoyable stories. Believably acted by all, intriguing story lines, suspense, and a curious quirky approach. Not so much a fell good movie as one that simply felt good.
I was kept guessing till the end, and if you enjoy wondering how its going to end, just imagine what it will be like when you are wondering how two stories will end. If you are baffled by that, you may well enjoy this one.
I love this film! It is an easy to watch chick flick! Funny in parts!
Gwyneth does a cracking English accent - although posh English is probably much easlier than Cockerney or Scouse. Shes also the sweetest actress around today. The schizophrenic plot thread works better than I would have expected, and makes this a worthwhile film to watch here for the third time - even for a single bloke.
However, single bloke might be excused for feeling queasy whenever John Hannah appears. If you think that might be too much of an ordeal, best to avoid.
I haven't seen this film since it came out in 1997 and I thoroughly enjoyed it both times round. John Hannah is just gorgeous and the lovely Gwynneth is a sweetheart. A clever storyline that bearing in mind there are two stories running alongside one and other, doesn't get confusing and you almost believe they are two different people. An easy film to watch (and cry over girls) that stands the test of time and one you can watch over and over again.
I think this film is brilliant, one of my all time favourites - must admit hubby hates it claims he can't keep up with the 2 different story line aspect of the film. I think it looks as good now as it did when it first came out. It makes you think where would your life be now if things were different.

I just re-watched this having seen it in the cinema, and I must admit I was a bit disappointed. I loved it first time round but now it seems a bit dated and contrived, depsite being only 6 years old -- it's not in the best of the last decade of British films.
Gwyneth is great, but John Hannah doesn't quite cut it as the leading man. Nice plot idea though.
This is a movie for the girls. It was a good film just not my cup of tea.Not a film to get out as a couple if you have been unfaithful to your partner.
I agree this now look a bit dated. Also saw this at the cinema and now DVD. I only added it to my selection to make up the numbers, but having watched it again, it's still an enjoyable film, worthy of spending the time to watch.
Not a bad one to make up the numbers in your selections queue. But I suppose not a first choice by any means.
Seen this film before forgotten how good it was. A brilliant film. I would definitely recommend this to anyone to watch.
Quite an interesting film of how your life can be different if we take a different path to get where we want too. Its a good idea for a film and how they show you the two different ways her life could of happend. worth a watch.
Hannah is a bit of a weak choice for a lover (ideally I should have been cast for the role but alas I was never interested in acting as a career) although he does play the nice guy pretty convincingly. However you couldn't imagine Paltrow falling for him in real life.
I thought the whole joke/witticism (whatever it was) about the Spanish Inquisition was odd and seemed out of sorts with the actual plot. I can see why they needed a phrase that was somewhat obscure but I still don't get the one they went with? So what 'not everyone expects The Spanish Inquisition' - and the point is? That's not funny?
Still a nice romantic movie and it does make you wonder how dramatically our lives could change based on a string of events linked to the occurrence of one minor event ...
Disappointing wine-bar romance. Tries to make London as chic as New York and London life as fascinating. Fails despite the presence of Gwynneth Paltrow. She's always watchable but the script doesn't give her opportunity to do much other than look fey in a faux-Shakespeare-in-Love kind of wistfulness. John Lynch is very good with his one-dimensional character and John Hannah does his usual Scot-with-a-heart routine. He is the possessor of true wisdom in the film and looks appropriately ancient. He must be the oldest-looking young man in the business. A film you want to like for a variety of reasons but just can't. Even at flyweight it doesn't pull its weight.
