Novelist Paul Auster's first original screenplay is clearly the product of a literary mind, as the dialogue hangs on the air like the aroma of a good cigar. But without director Wayne Wang's insouciant control and nuanced performances from the likes of William Hurt, Stockard Channing and Forest Whitaker, this episodic roundelay about the inevitability of chance and coincidence would have seemed stiff and unconvincing. Instead, it's a vibrant portrait of the small community that congregates around Harvey Keitel's Brooklyn cigar shop, whose customers meet fortune and tragedy alike with enviable equanimity.

This film resembles 'coffee and cigarettes', the last Jarmush in date. Very american, but not in the mainstream/blockbuster sense.
A decidedly very independent film, full of odd but very interesting characters with strange hobbies.
The whole film revolves about a man and his cigar shop, who've always been there. This makes the film very grounded.
From there, a procession of famous actors, appearing as the regulars of the shop, friends.
They have very funny conversations, sometimes more serious but always interesting.
This is a very entertaining film, not for those who like action of course....
If you like it, Try to get Brooklyn Boogie, the next film, still related with this friendly cigar seller and his shop.
Also If you like america and americans that way, watch Pecker, another intelligent and funny comedy in a similar style.
I'm a huge Paul Auster fan, so I was quite surprised to hear he'd written two screenplays that I hadn't heard of.
Very touching, I interpret it as a quiet study on human nature, covering loss, empathy, regret, solitude and friendship.
The main characters aren't heroes, the bad guys aren't, when examined, perhaps so bad as they seem.
With possibly one of the most beautiful endings (it made me a little tearful) I've seen, Smoke is a must-see film.
English actress Billie Piper is to reprise her role as Doctor Who's assistant Rose Tyler in three episodes of the cult drama, it emerged this week. Piper starred as the inquisitive and funny sidekick when the show returned to TV screens in 2005, alongside Christopher Eccleston as the eponymous time-traveller. However, her departure from the series last year meant that two new companions have since filled her shoes - Catherine Tate as Donna and Freema Agyeman as Martha - both helping out David... Read more
