  • A film apart

This film resembles 'coffee and cigarettes', the last Jarmush in date. Very american, but not in the mainstream/blockbuster sense.

A decidedly very independent film, full of odd but very interesting characters with strange hobbies.

The whole film revolves about a man and his cigar shop, who've always been there. This makes the film very grounded.

From there, a procession of famous actors, appearing as the regulars of the shop, friends.

They have very funny conversations, sometimes more serious but always interesting.

This is a very entertaining film, not for those who like action of course....

If you like it, Try to get Brooklyn Boogie, the next film, still related with this friendly cigar seller and his shop.

Also If you like america and americans that way, watch Pecker, another intelligent and funny comedy in a similar style.

  • A character comedy of ties and friendship

I absolutely loved this film. It's become my all time favourite. If you enjoy quirky social realism with humour, absorbing dialogue, human narratives, characters with surprising secrets, strung by a thread between unexpected diverse together in friendship, you'll love Smoke. It would make an un-obvious but unbeatable Christmas afternoon classic too, with that hopefully not cheesing some people out.

  • Almost a visual book.....if you see what I mean

Basically, I mean that this film plays out before your eyes rather gently, allowing the characters and your curiosity about them to unfold in much the same way literary characters gradually develop as you progress though a book.

I am a fan of Harvey Keitel anyway, and he didnt let me down in this film.

In fact I thought the quality of acting and the depth of characterisation was precisely what you would expect from the top names in this film.

Not a film for people who like action and melodrama, as this film portrays a more realistic view of a handful of people and the twists and turns of their lives.

Compeling, brilliantly written film. Its not for the impatient viewer but has many beautiful moments and wonderful acting. Keitel particularly taking on a role more similar to his early parts from Scorcese films. It could have been a much shorter, tighter film suited to a wider audience but thankfully it wasn't!

  • Smoke on!

Harvey Keitel owns a cigar shop and some people from the neighbourhood congregate there to tell stories and hang out. The movie dips into each of the characters and a vague plot emerges whereby different people effect each others lives. It's one of those films where not a lot happens but the quality of the dialogue in the character interaction and the fine cast make it a good movie.
