After the feel-good mythology of Field of Dreams, director Phil Alden Robinson changed tack completely and came up with this smart and snappy caper that is blessed with a sparkling script and an outstanding ensemble cast. Robert Redford, graciously sending himself up just a little, plays the former student radical who now makes a living heading a team that is paid to break into hi-tech buildings to show up lapses in security systems. However, his past returns to haunt him when he is blackmailed into stealing the ultimate codebreaker. This film may be one of the best I have seen in many years, and I am writing this in 2004.
This is a charming film with just the right amount of humor, and unlike many modern films it doesnt patronise the audience in any way. The all-star cast put on a superb performance, the writing is sharp and witty, and the plot is full, intelligent and engrossing.
This film is delightful, with just the right mix of tension, humor, action and most of all it is pure fun. This timeless film is a jewel that you will want to watch again and again!
Okay, the plot is as complex as a straight line (and depends on all the actors telling all the other actors something they all already know), and the writers have to do some higly vigorous hand-waving as they skate over the technological holes ('Look! This line on the oscilloscope _proves_ that my theory is correct!').
But this is still quite a good movie, with lots of famous faces (even though Dan Ackroyd is shamefully under-used); ideal Sunday afternoon fodder.
I'm glad I didn't pony up ?4-odd for this at the rental shop, but worth adding to your list here.
