Snow Day

Nickelodeon Movies presents this family comedy concerning a day in the life of the Brandstons, a bumbling Syracuse family whose town falls victim to a sudden snowstorm. While father Tom (Chevy Chase), a struggling meteorologist, battles with his producer over whether wearing outrageous outfits will boost his ratings, his 10-year-old daughter, Natalie (Zena Grey), forges a bitter battle with the local snowplow driver (the always funny Chris Elliott). His menacing snowplow threatens to clean the roads before the authorities can grant the kids a second consecutive snow day. Also thrown into the mix is the teenager Hal (Mark Webber), who is too obsessed with the beautiful Claire (Emmanuelle Chriqui) to realize that his best friend, Lane (Schuyler Fisk), has a crush on him.

A “snow day” is that special day, traditionally recognised in America, when a freak blizzard causes an unexpected break from school. In this comedy, Mark Webber uses the opportunity to make a play for the glamorous Emmanuelle Chriqui, while his younger sister Zena Grey tries to keep the Snow-plowman (Chris Elliott) occupied so that her school remains closed. Director Chris Koch piles on the teen movie clichés with all the lumbering tenacity of Elliott's plough itself. Yet the picture is good-natured and energetic enough to make it watchable, if not particularly memorable.

    Watchable

Chevy Chase is excellent, but only has a small role. The younger kids are just annoying, but Emmanuelle Chiqui is worth the rental alone.
