A reconciliation between estranged father and son — a familiar Hollywood staple — provides the basis for this comedy adventure, that is sadly lacking in both thrills and jokes. Cuba Gooding Jr plays Ted, a successful Miami dentist who discovers he's adopted but has been left an Alaskan cabin and a pack of sled dogs by his real mother. Travelling ice-wards to the small town of Tolketna, Ted also encounters his white biological father, the aggressive and unwelcoming Thunder Jack (played by a suitably grizzly James Coburn). This familial tension inexplicably leads the city dweller to enter the Arctic Challenge sled race, with much predictable physical comedy ensuing from his efforts on the ice. Director Brian Levant, who was also behind the comic canine antics of Beethoven, brings a lap-dog talent to bear here. The result is dogged — but dull.
Lighweight, slapstick comedy of the sort that Disney made in the '60s and then wisely abandoned.
