LOVEFiLM Review Snowtown

  • 4 stars out of 5

Unstoppably grim it might be, but the hardest film of the year to watch is also impossible to take your eyes off.

Very good gritty film from Australia. It is shocking and sad and awfully good. It is tragic because the events did take place and mr Bunting did exist. A horrible slice of human nature in its basest form.

  • Harrowing, Psychological Journey

    Rated - 4.0 stars

The fact that Snowtown is based on real events makes this film probably the most harrowing film I'll watch all year - and certainly the most disturbing I've seen in a while. Fantastic portrayal of the psychological journey that a teenage boy goes through as he traverses through the many feelings associated with physical and mental abuse, hope, happiness (though short-lived) and an unrelenting sense of dread and fear. As a fictional piece this would attract a rating of five stars because we, the viewer, are immersed within Jamie's world and go through much of the emotions he feels with him. This however is not entirely fictional and for that reason alone, I cannot bring myself to give it a higher rating - some may see that as a good thing.

Before you watch this film, make a decision about whether you want these events in your head. It is a compelling portrayal and the actors truly inhabit their roles, but very graphic in its portrayal of the violence and sadism. A disturbing film. I was unsure how to rate this film - it's admirable as a piece of film-making which reveals the complexity of the relationships .... but in some ways I wish I had never watched it, and some of the depictions felt unnecessarily realistic and voyeuristic.

Stunningly powerful, the entire cast were so believable and truly belonged for their roles. could not blink for one moment as it was a bluntly and gently revealing the the astonishing truth about an underclass family deprived from everything a society has to offer, and deviant behaviour building up to be the foundation of commitment of true crime.

  • |Can Aussies do gritty? Yes

The open scenes are probably the grimmest start to any film I have ever seen. But it made me want to stick with it and I'm glad I did. Watching this film was not easy at all, but it was worth watching it. Always thought we Brits and the French were the best at making very gritty films, but the Aussies are becoming a good competition with this and other films like Animal Kingdom.

Possibly one of the most disturbing films I've ever watched. I still couldn't stop though and had to see it through to the end.
