The first actor to sign a long-term contract at Disney, Bobby Driscoll won a special Oscar for his work in 1949, although it clearly had more to do with The Window, than this slight blend of live-action and animation. Although the nominated song, Lavender Blue, was one of Uncle Walt's favourites, today's youngsters will get more enjoyment out of numbers like Stick-with-it-ivity, one of the many animated sequences in which farm boy Driscoll (who'd also starred in the studio's similarly folksy Song of the South) learns the lessons of life as he trains his black lamb, Danny, for a country fair.
Live action nostalgia with a few cartoon segments; well enough done, but mainly appealing to well brought up children.
