Excellent, thoughtful sci-fi

Not everyone will like Solaris. Some will complain that it isn't up to the original 1972 film, while others may not like the distinctly non-Hollywood introspective plot. It is certainly to a wider audience than the original (being about half as long), but it does suffer slightly from a more 'Hollywood' style explaination of what's going on.
Everyone would probably agree that it is a very well made film though. Clooney is the best he's ever been, and the cinematography is excellent. The quiet soundtrack adds to the whole feeling of the film perfectly. The film is thought provoking and is a good example of genuine sci-fi that makes you think about it after the film as finished.
Don't let people who tell you that it's not as good as the original put you off. Perhaps it isn't, but it's certainly more accessable.- Was this review helpful to you?

By Ghost-Walker (1 review) , 18 Mar 2013Not all films are for all viewers, and for that we can be thankful. Variation is king. This film is a slow (which is appropriate) paced journey into self. The fact it is a sci-fi is secondary to the questions it raises about what it means to exist - to live, to love, to die. If you want fast paced action, forget it. If you want glorious space battles with cgi monsters coming out of the screen, try something else. If you want a well executed thought provoking film, then give it a try. Slow ... Could have been better

I like Sci-Fi but this was so slow and at times so complicated that it left the viewer what was going on. For me this film could have been a lot better with the storyline it had.

Good...but sooooooo sloooooooooow...
By JayLow (122 reviews) , 26 Nov 2011I like intelligent films. Films that ask questions of the audience, and credit them with the ability to think; films that are made for adults who want more than visual thrills and seen-it-all before storylines.
And Solaris is an intelligent film. It has characters you can invest in, great acting, it looks great and it leaves the audience to ponder and discuss what they have seen for many weeks to come. Yep Solaris ticks a lot of boxes...
BUT
It's sooooo slooooow. There are glaciers with glaciel arthritis and glaciel fatigue syndrome that move faster than this. That in itself isn't the problem - sometimes a bit of introspection is good - but the slow pace never changes. There's no change in mood, no change in feeling, no change in the rhythm of the film. The overall effect is like sitting through a lecture from a monotone and socially inept physics lecturer droning on about something you no longer find interesting.
That said - I'm glad Solaris is out there. And, hey, it's better than Jonah Hex!- Was this review helpful to you?
