Best Ever Western
By Owen McCarthy from Gloucestershire , 20 May 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
If you want a version of the wild west seldom told, then this is the film for you. Made well before any ofthe usual knocking the USA films were made. There is a warning on the opening title scene, be warned they mean every word of it. The end brings one to tears, thinking what fellow human being can do in the name of progress is a disturbing thought. Well acted throughout, the only real let down is the fiance, but he is in it for such a short time it does not matter. The screwy general of the cavalry, is too realistic for comfort, you can imagine it was his offspring that gave the orders in the trenches to go over the top. Great film not to be missed. I cannot praise it highly enough, I watched this when it was first released and it is still as good as ever.- Was this review helpful to you?

(32)Shouting The Battle Cry Of Freedom !!!
By a customer , 27 Dec 2011I'm not really into Westerns and this is the only time I have seen 'Soldier Blue'.
It's a good film and I really wasn't expecting there to be a love story involved.
I remember it being on the pictures when I was a child, but later, it was banned due to the horrific scenes, so never got the chance to view it myself.
The ending is the real reason this film was banned and the story is filmed as the battles really were.
If this is how the West was won, no wonder America is the nation it is today.....
America is still ruled by the bullet and didn't get much of a good start !!!- Was this review helpful to you?

Good, bad and ugly
By a customer , 07 Apr 2011This film is a mixture of awesome and awful, but the awesome is so good the film deserves 5 stars.
The awful arises from the main purpose of the film, which is to condemn an atrocity committed by US cavalry on Cheyenne in the mid nineteenth century. The event is shown gruesomely, and the heroine is seen running around like a headless chicken trying to protect children and women; the Cheyenne leader is portrayed as noble, principled and musclular; while the US general is portrayed as ignoble, unprincipled and effete. It's just one dreadful stereotype after another.
The awesome arises from the sub-plot of two strangers brought together on a flight: one is a down to earth woman used to sexual abuse, and the other is a naive US soldier with a sense of right and wrong. During their flight they meet hostile Kiowa men and a gun-runner.
The acting of the three main characters is first-class, the scenery is magnificent, the dialogue is top-class, and the filming is great.
So it has to merit 5 stars.- Was this review helpful to you?
