Interesting but abrupt...By PaulaWestwood (397 reviews) from Ashton-Under-Lyne , 26 Aug 2008
[Highly rated reviewer]Put director Shane Meadows and superb young actor Thomas Turgoose together and you can be forgiven for immediately thinking.. Brilliant... 'This England' all over again, a must see. Unfortunalely you may be slightly dissapointed. This new output covers a very current social trend (European Immigration) along with an age old situation (runaway teens in London), and is painted brilliantly in black and white, with superb performances throughout. The only problem is, there is a distinct lack of actual solid content and what there is seems to be a little old hat. Add to that a very abrupt and slightly implausible endpiece and despite the craft of the film, it just does not really satisfy, entertain or educate in the way we expected it to, worth a watch but only if you enjoy a director and cast who can craft a fine portrait on film rather than a whole story.

dullBy a customer from Stornoway , 17 Jan 2009Ive loved all of Shane Meadows work, up until this movie ..
Found it dull, very dull . I had little interest in any of the characters or storylines..
Its comes across not so much a film to follow his other work, but as a side project
Its the kind of thing you would expect to find as an extra on one of his other movies
Dead mans shoes and a room for Romeo Brass are both fantastic movies

[Highly rated reviewer]Interesting character development which leaves you waiting for more.
Some good performances from the two leads.
Well worth watching.

Somers TownBy a customer from Leeds , 16 Jan 2009As talented as Shane Meadows is, there has been an underlying problem with the last two features. Just as you feel the right time has come to take the story to another level, it ends. There is a complete lack of consequence within the writing, which makes the whole thing seem premature.
In this particular film, we are witness to a friendship that never really seems to be at threat by the one thing you feel was written in to do exactly that. The two leads fall for the same girl, yet are quite content to share. As nice as this message is to the audience (you don't fall out over a girl), by not challenging your characters and putting them into difficult situations, you are limiting your drama.
There is also a lack of back-story with Tommo, and although he hints throughout the film about how he has no home to go to, the audience are screaming out for an answer to that age old question...why??? A character without a history remains a blank canvass, and as good as the performance is, you feel he was never really tested like many actors before him.
Despite all that, the film looks beautiful, and Meadows has the knack (like Scorsese) to use music to enhance the feel of a piece. I'm convinced that this very talented film-maker will one day make his masterpiece, but I'm afraid it's going to need a better screenplay, and a longer running time. Roll on the next one, Shane!!
Hmmmm Somers townBy a customer from England , 16 Jan 2009I didn't want to be dissapointed, but I was. I started to get a little bored and wanted to turn it off but I just kept thinking that something was going to happen...and it didnt. If your like me and you enjoyed Dead Mans Shoes and This is England then perhaps give it a try but its not something I'd recommend, unless your really tired and you want to put something on to make you sleep.
nice one shane!By a customer from Leeds , 14 Jan 2009Maybe its just me but i thought this film was a masterpiece. Obviously not on the same level as Dead Mans Shoes was but defiantly an amazing film, I loved the development throughout and despite the very - abrupt ending I couldn't help but fall in love with the film because of its 'feel good factor'. Highly recommend!!
