    [Highly rated reviewer]

Somersault is squarely based on the 'Coming of age' plot structure, and doesn't really challenge this stereotype. We follow Cornish?s character, ?Heidi? as she leaves home and travels through an Australian winter - forming new relationships and experiencing a new life. What is far more original and impressive is the stunning cinematography and fabulous score; these alone are enough reason to watch the film. I admit the script made me cringe at times, and I wouldn?t recommend this film to people who are after a thrilling plot with copious action and twists, however, those who can appreciate a film for its visual and aural beauty will not be disappointed.

  • Good but pace a little slow

Good performances, interesting cinematography but ultimately the pace was just a little too slow and became ever so slightly dull at times.

  • Bitter sweet

A bittersweet portrayal of a vulnerable girl flexing her new found sexuality; this film walks on a taut line, its drama hinging on the threat of her, or her boyfriends potential fall. Perhaps to their destruction. I found its' understated performances moving and naturalistic. Lynette Curran's Heidi has a porcelain beauty which lends a fragile and dreamlike quality to an everyday story of a runaway seeking her self in a series of makeshift moments. A film that deals with the surface humdrum of working class life while unafraid of the deeper currents of sexuality, breaking taboos, intimacy, self destruction and other weightier issues, all handled with the softness of wool mittens. Speaking of which there are cinematic visual heightened moments of rare beauty such as the way a simple image of new red gloves are used to portray of mood of optimism and celebration. Perhaps I should have given this film a five after all.

Very well-acted, good storyline and script. Coming of age drama, for those who appreciate a good film, and don't require constant action to keep their attention. Well worth a watch.

Good film, worth a watch. Not one for cheering you up if you're feeling a bit rubbish about life, but an insighful and poignant film nonetheless.
