Stephen King ...ONLY BETTER
By a customer from Bolton, England , 24 Sep 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
I remember watching this on TV in the early 80's. It had been adapted from one of my 'all time' favourite novels by Ray Bradbury (of 'Martian Chronicles' and 'Farenheit 451' fame).
The novel was probably impossible to transfer to film as it seems to invoke an un-ease in each reader in a different way- films by there very nature are a 'child' of the director and work best if you and he (or she) are on the same wavelength.
That said this is an excellent attempt, right from tha arrival of the Lightning Rod salesman (just ahead of the storm) to the final realisation of mortality and the 'growing-up' of the two leads.
Not much blood and gore in this but plenty of classic horror and unease.
It is a film of stature and SHOULD have more standing ..alongside such as Stephen King's 'IT' (another DVD which started life as a TV film).- Was this review helpful to you?

Creepy Classic
By Fraught from Basingstoke, England , 17 Aug 2007This is such an incredible film. Often overlooked, and sadly underrated, this amazing film is just the ticket for those cold Autumn evenings.
The film tells us a story of a Dark Carnival that comes to the same town every few years, and how the town changes when it does.
The film has some beautiful cinematography, an emotional score by James Horner, some really good acting from the two youngsters, but the show stealer is Jonathon Pryce as Mr Dark. The lines he gets to deliever are just brilliant and the film just crackles whenever he is there.
Like other people have said, although this is an early Disney film, don't let that put you off... this is really really creepy, and very atmostpheric! Too gruesome for youngsters, but will knock the socks off of anyone ages 12+
This is a perfect film for Halloween night!- Was this review helpful to you?

Excellent!
By a customer from Dundee, Scotland , 30 Jan 2007A fantastically dark film from the pen of Ray Bradbury. Completely underrated and has been impossible to get in this country.
Although it's a Disney, don't let this put you off, they did go through a period where they made good films.
Loved it as a child and adore it now.
See it for Jonathon Price's creepy perfomance as Mr Dark, if only to see where 'The League of Gentlemen' got it from...- Was this review helpful to you?

Classic adult Disney
By Kermode (39 reviews) from Aberdare , 11 Oct 2006This is undoubtably a classic
tragically rarely seen film.
Panned by most critics at the
time. It beautifully filmed showing the autumn colours
at their finest. Excellent performances all round, with
Jason Robards just stealing
from Jonathan Price's first
Hollywood outing. It is generally creepy and atmospheric and can be enjoyed by the over 10's but
to scary for younger kids.note
the spider scene. surprisingly snubbed by tv and all the inferior over shown films that feature. A
true classic firm- Was this review helpful to you?
