The Somme documentary was a truly enlightening piece. The horrors of trench warfare, and the staggering inflexibility of 1916 British military command were illustrated, in this very effective and in some instances horrific documentary. A must see for new students of the 1914-18 conflict, although perhaps slightly light for seasoned historians.
The talents of Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Audrey Tautou are reunited in A Very Long Engagement, which comes to DVD from today. The pair had previously worked together on the highly acclaimed Amelie. Jean-Pierre Becker is another to be associated with both productions. A Very Long Engagement is set in the trenches of the Somme, towards the end of World War I.
