This is the American reworking of the Gérard Depardieu/Nathalie Baye modern classic The Return of Martin Guerre, and it has to be said that it isn't a patch on the original, either in terms of tension, intelligence or performance. Nevertheless, there is still much to enjoy and engross in the central mystery surrounding the true identity of returning American Civil War veteran Richard Gere, in particular the sensitive playing of the excellent Jodie Foster as his confused widow. Unfortunately, neither Gere nor co-star Bill Pullman (as an embittered suitor) can hold a candle to Foster in the acting department, and the resolution of the conundrum will not satisfy everybody.
"...SOMMERSBY is an unabashedly romantic and at the some time morally intricate Civil War-era tale splendidly acted by Richard Gere and Jodie Foster..."
Havinh heard nothing about this film before i went in and was very open minded! And i loved it!!!
Jodie foster and richard gere are fantastic in the roles and the sexual chemistry between the two is electrifying!!!
It all builds up to a court case where you are constantly changing your mind as to whether or not he is Mr Sommersby! The ending left me in tears, as you see just how much the couple actually love each other!
Would recommend this to everyone who believes in love!
Jack Sommersby comes back from the American Civil War a different man. A very different man - one who inspires others and who doesn't beat up his wife anymore. Frankly, as played by Gere, he's a bit too good to be true, so wife Foster's dilemma isn't much of one. It culminates in a courtroom showdown which manages to give us very little in the way of answers, and while Gere is charismatic in the lead, Foster is as restrained as the corsets her character wears.
