Is it him...is it not him???By mark wilson from Stoke On Trent, England , 29 Oct 2004
[Highly rated reviewer]Havinh heard nothing about this film before i went in and was very open minded! And i loved it!!!
Jodie foster and richard gere are fantastic in the roles and the sexual chemistry between the two is electrifying!!!
It all builds up to a court case where you are constantly changing your mind as to whether or not he is Mr Sommersby! The ending left me in tears, as you see just how much the couple actually love each other!
Would recommend this to everyone who believes in love!

Expectations exceeded and proved wrong.By a customer , 10 Dec 2012Came across this film by chance, wasn't sure if I would bother watching it so put it on low priority. However, it gave on TV and there was nothing else on so thought I'd watch. SO GLAD I DID otherwise I would have missed out on this lovely gem of a film.
Yeah it's a bit slow but that's the beauty of it you
connect and see the characters and relations developing. Basically it's one of those feel good
period dramas but sad. It stays with you even after the film has ended.
You'll enjoy it if you like sweet and touching stories. Not if you like car chases, twists, lots of sex, thrill after thrills etc.
An interesting remakeBy a customer , 07 Dec 2011This can film never stand on the same platform as the French medieval story upon which it is based, which was filmed starring the young Depardieu. It is therefore quite good that they have chosen to change one or two crucial story line details in this 'brought up to date' story set in the aftermath of the American Civil War, as this prevents comparisons spoiling a good tale.
the Film SommersbyBy a customer , 07 May 2011Excellent keeps you guessing loved it. When you think about it this could happen to anyone in any country any time anywhere
Is he or isn't he?By RJNeb2 (922 reviews) from London , 01 Jul 2007Jack Sommersby comes back from the American Civil War a different man. A very different man - one who inspires others and who doesn't beat up his wife anymore. Frankly, as played by Gere, he's a bit too good to be true, so wife Foster's dilemma isn't much of one. It culminates in a courtroom showdown which manages to give us very little in the way of answers, and while Gere is charismatic in the lead, Foster is as restrained as the corsets her character wears.
Just FabBy a customer from Northampton , 14 Jan 2007If you love sad films this is the one for you.
Very moving, tense in places and you want to scream at the end of the film for him to own up.
