The eighth and last entry in Blake Edwards's long-running series, SON OF THE PINK PANTHER stars Roberto Benigni (LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL) as the illegitimate son of the benighted Inspector Clouseau. Princess Yasmin, a member of the royal family of Lugash, is kidnapped while on vacation in France by terrorist Hans (Robert Davi), who demands a 100 million dollar ransom, and Chief of Police Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) is called in to handle the case. Hans makes the mistake of being involved in a crash with Jacques Gambrelli, the bumbling illegitimate son of Clouseau, who manages to catch sight of the princess. Gambrelli also crashes into Dreyfus, who manifests his familiar Tourette's symptoms after meeting the son of the man who so often pushed him to the brink of insanity. After confirming his identity, the police chief sends Gambrelli on what he hopes will be a suicidal mission to find the princess in Lugash. Begnini is charming as the heir to the legacy of ineptitude.

One can understand Blake Edwards's frustration at seeing a successful series stopped in its tracks by the death of Peter Sellers. Yet surely the critical mauling meted out to those cut-and-paste jobs Trail and Curse, should have alerted him to the fact that the public were simply not interested in Clouseau clones. Here he is, however, putting that uniquely talented Italian comic Roberto Benigni through his paces as a gormless gendarme, whose only talent is to annoy poor old Herbert Lom. The kidnapping plot is inane, the slapstick inept and the cast ineffectual. All in all, mind-bogglingly bad.
Benigni, a natural clown with splendidly fractured English, was an ideal choice, if one had to be made, to take over the role of a bumbling policeman in the Pink Panther series Ð but that had already become lacking in inspiration during Peter Selle
after being a huge peter sellers fan, i naturally hired this film to watch it. but even withous sellers, the film was completly boring. it was nice to see herbert lom and all the usuals there. But the boring storyline was so annoying i fell asleep after 30 mins and i never usually do that.
Not worth the postage!!!!
Once Peter Sellers had died there seems absolutely no point whatsoever to continue the role of Inspector Clouseau.Sellers was unique and to respect the excellent work Sellers did no sequels let alone one about Clouseau's son (?????????)should ever have been made. Why bother????
What is it about Inspector Clouseau that we just can’t let him go? Most iconic comic characters are really extensions of the clowns who played them – in the slapstick era it was always just another Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin or Harold Lloyd picture, regardless of the story. In modern times there aren’t many funny men who inspire that kind of loyalty. We’ll stay tuned to TV sit-coms for years, but on the big screen it’s rare to find a comedy role strong enough...
