Filled with excellent and interesting archive footage, this is a comprehensive documentary of the life of Shostakovich himself, and very little to do with the sonata for viola.
Both the modern and aging footage share a similar poor quality, which really don't affect the enjoymeny as the content is so engaging. Many of the great contemporaries are included which not only adds to the enjoyment but also puts it all into context.
Particularly effective is the footage of Russian troops shown with excerpts from the Leningrad symphony. If you like the music of Shostakovich then this is must to see.- Was this review helpful to you?

(2)A tale of music and fear
By a customer from London , 29 Dec 2009I enjoyed this film, but it's well... quirky. Typical macabre strange Russion 80s film, carefully critical of Stalinist times without implying anything negative about the USSR... well a bit of a mess really if you look at the complex situation that Shostakovitch's life took place in. If anything, it shockingly reminded me of the cold fear of pre-Berlin Wall times. However it was lovingly made, with interesting footage. Still kept the man himself an enigma - what can you expect given the times! Highlight of this film is the beautiful conversation of peers, Dmitri Shostakovitch and David Oistrach.- Was this review helpful to you?
