SOUL FOOD is a warmly atmospheric ensemble drama set around the abundant table of Chicago family matriarch Mother Joe, whose extended brood orbits around the stabilising force of her sumptuous Sunday dinners. However, when dissent brews between the competitive sisters Maxine and Teri, grandson (and narrator) Ahmad tries to reunite the family. This moving film, written and directed wonderfully by George Tillman Jr., features excellent performances from Vanessa L. Williams, Vivica A. Fox, Nia Long, Irma P. Hall and the rest of the talented cast.

This well acted and well made drama focuses, as the title suggests, on the Sunday dinner get-togethers of a large African-American family. Matriarch Irma P Hall's home cooking just about keeps her three grown-up daughters and their partners from each other's throats, until a tragedy forces them to reconcile their differences. This is a terrific ensemble piece, boosted by the unfussy script and direction of George Tillman Jr, with solid performances from Vanessa L Williams, Vivica A Fox , Nia Long and Mekhi Phifer.

heart warming story
I watched this film one afternoon while my son was having a nap, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Its a heart warming story of an American black family who all come together every Sunday and their Big Mama cooks them all dinner.Its mainly based on the relationships of the 3 sisters and how the family starts to fall apart when Big Mama goes into hospital and isn't there to help them with all their problems.
If your after action or adventure then look else were but if you want to sit and get involved with some really good characters and their lives and loves then check this out.
If you liked Waiting To Exhale then you will like this film. -

Sentimental cliche
The film could have been a strong statement for the strengths and virtues of family loyalty but has been let down by a continuous stream of cliches
