Nearly perfectBy a customer , 25 May 2013South Pacific is one of the greatest musical plays ever written and this film almost does it justice. The Blu-ray transfer is incredible, rich and pinpoint sharp. The soundtrack - with a rich orchestration that fills out Robert Russell Bennett's theatrical arrangement - is crystal clear and suitably overwhelming when necessary. The perfomances - especially those of Mitzi Gaynor, John Kerr and Ray Walston - are convincing. France Nuyen is ravishing. At the heart of this musical is Hammerstein's humanity and it is a plea for tolerance. Rodger's score is wonderful. Rodgers and Hammerstein were the most important musical theatre writers since Gilbert and Sullivan and this is one of their masterpieces. Why not five stars? The colour filter effects. I hope that someday someone will use digital technology to remove them.
Loveliest, saddest of all Rodgers and Hammerstein musicalsBy CarlHalling (12 reviews) from Greater London Urban Area , 31 Mar 2012
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHideTo me, this is the greatest of all the Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, with some of the loveliest and most romantic songs in the shape of 'Younger than Springtime', 'Some Enchanted Evening'; and of course 'Happy Talk'. The romance between Mitzi Gaynor (Nelly Forbush) and Rossano Brazzi (Emil Lebecque) is the central one; but it's the tragic doomed affair between the fine underrated actor John Kerr (as Lt. Cable); and the adorable France Nuyen (Liat) that truly moves. The chemistry between them is so touching, and their final heartrending parting effectively incarnates all lost love.
A beautiful intensely moving experience.

A masterpiece is ruinedBy a customer from Warwickshire , 12 Apr 2010This film has every thing you can possibly fined in a great musical, some fine acting performances, fantastic scenery of the south pacific, music by Rogers & Hammerstein. All this is totally ruined by the addition of colour filters for every song in the film. What were they thinking of Art, or was this a fashion of the time. If South Pacific could be re-released without colour filters it would be the masterpiece it deserves, as it is it is sadly flawed.
South PacificBy Miriam from Ealing, London , 12 Apr 2010One of the best musicals, ever.
Packed with lots of wonderful, memorable songs, such as
Some Enchanted Evening; Younger than Springtime;Bali Hi; Nothing Like a Dame, etc, etc.
Plus a good love story, tinged with sadness.
