A Rodgers and Hammerstein classic revolving around a forbidden love affair between a native girl and a young American sailor on a Pacific island during World War II. SOUTH PACIFIC's blend of war, love, and racial bigotry is based on the novel TALES OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC by James A. Michener. The musical follows the spunky Nellie Forbush, a World War II nurse stationed on a tropical island in the Pacific. Nellie meets a French plantation owner and falls in love with the mysterious man whose lifestyle is so different from her own Little Rock roots. Lt. Joseph Cable, a marine sent to the island with top-secret plans to spy on the nearby Japanese fleet, becomes friends with a local merchant, Bloody Mary, she brings him to the enchanted island of Bali Ha'i, where she introduces him to her daughter--an exotic beauty he soon becomes enamored with. The lovely tropical location is the perfect backdrop to showcase Rodgers & Hammerstein's mesmerising score, which includes the classic songs "Some Enchanted Evening," "Bali Ha'i," "There Is Nothin' Like a Dame," "Younger Than Springtime," "A Cock-eyed Optimist," and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair."

In this small-screen remake of Rodgers and Hammerstein's hit musical, director Richard Pearce dispenses with the visual artiness of Joshua Logan's 1958 version and returns to James A Michener's source stories to re-emphasise the themes of racial prejudice and the human cost of war. But he doesn't neglect the musical interludes and the classic tunes are competently performed by a cast ably led by Glenn Close as Nellie Forbush and Harry Connick Jr as Lieutenant Cable.
Overlong, solidly produced film of the musical stage hit, with great locations, action climaxes and lush photography (also a regrettable tendency to use alarming colour filters for dramatic emphasis).
The special effects + colour depths +
sound quality, make this film a must for a special night in ... Turn your volume up full, and enjoy the musicical qualities of R & H plus the spectactular rendition(s) of the songs ... Well done to Joshua Logan who directed this EPIC musical !!!
I don't think that it's as good as seeing a live performance, but it is still a good film.
