    [Highly rated reviewer]

this dvd is superb. it is a futuristic film that calls upon the city of Los Angeles to act, after the Texas cities of El Paso and Abilene have fallen victim to twin nuclear attacks on July 4th, 2008, during a heatwave, where a catastrophe of unimaginable proportions precipitates America into war.

The Patriot Act has been upgraded to a new agency known as US Ident , which keeps constant tabs on citizens, even to the extent of censoring the internet, and using fingerprints, in order to access computers and bank accounts.

In order to be able to respond to the fuel scarcity, the German company Treer designs a generator of inexhaustible energy which operates thanks to ocean currents.

in the city of Los Angeles, on the brink of chaos, and social, economic and environmental disaster, we follow the criss-crossed destinies of Boxer Santaros played by Dwayne Johnson also known as The Rock, who is an action film actor stricken with amnesia, Krysta Now played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, an ex-porn star in the midst of reconverting, and developing her own reality television project, and twin brothers - Roland and Ronald Taverner (both played by Seann William Scott), whose destinies becomes confused with that of all mankind.

The name of the film refers to the Southland, a name used by locals to refer to Southern California, and more specifically, Greater Los Angeles.

    well worth watching.

this was a brilliant movie, i loved the complex storyline that had me thinking and guessing trying to work out what was going on the whole way through rather than having everything spelt out and spoon feed to me like other films

well done to the writers and diretors for a film that has me thinking about pretty much everyday since ive seen it

i still cant belive how many bad reviews this film has

  • Donnie Darko it's not

    Rated - 0.5 stars

Watched maybe half-hour, couldn't get a clue as to what the hell was going on, couldn't care to try hard to get it either. There's a whole bizarre surrealistic feel to it that could be nice but just feels uncomfortable and unpleasant not in a good way. Acting was horrible, I got the feeling that it was meant to seem somewhat on purpose to add to the oddness, but really looking at the actors, I'm pretty sure it was inadvertent. Donnie Darko is one of my favourite movies ever, this was just like what the hell am I watching!

Richard Kelly tries very hard to give this tale some sort of coherence, but ultimately fails. It ends up being like a hybrid Lynch/Besson movie. It doesn't help that the film contains part 4-6 of the saga, while 1-3 are in prequel comic books, which I haven't read and didn't know about. It is narrated by one of the characters (a poor Justin Timberlake, don't give up the day job), but it is not clear just how he knows what everyone else is getting up to. This was put on after its disastrous Cannes debut.

Some may think this visionary, but you can't fault him for trying. The B-List cast doesn't help.

In my opinion, one of the worst films i've (partly)watched, it is utter tripe, and a waste of good rental money, whoever gave this a good rating must have contacts with the film makers (MAYBE FAMILY)
