Heston's apocalypse part 1
By SteveyGee from South Yorkshire , 30 Aug 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
One of Charlton Heston's great apocalyptic movies along with Planet of the Apes and The Omega Man, Soylent green tells the story of a horrendously over crowded future, where people pay to sleep on the stairs of apartments and food is supplied by the mysterious Soylent corporation.
When Heston's cynical detective is assigned to investigate the murder of a member of Soylents board he uncovers a horrifying secret.
Blessed with possibly the best twist ending ever and filled with memorable scenes such as the suicide emporium and the green house containing the last ten trees in Manhattan, Soylent green is a joy to watch.
Even if youre not a fan of sci-fi, Soylent Green could be the film that changes your mind.- Was this review helpful to you?

(47)Another shocking revelation for Charlton Heston
By andrew hansen from Cardiff , 07 Nov 2011Made five years before I was even born, i'm glad to say I have aged better than the film has. The acting and effects are questionable and the kitschy futuristic setting is laughable. That said, the concept of an over-populated planet fed on Soylent Green as a result of a shortage of organic food is a good one. Heston plays a cop evading the government who try to prevent him from exposing a 'Planet of The Apes magnitude' revelation he and his cohort have discovered. A re-make is in the pipeline. See this first.- Was this review helpful to you?

Painful In The Extreme !!!
By a customer , 06 Oct 2011I saw this film years and years ago, way back in the 1970's and thought it both frightening and fantastic.....
Oh how time changes your thoughts.
If ever there was a reason to leave old futuristic films as a memory.....
this is it !!!- Was this review helpful to you?

Should I make room?
By TheLybrarian (3 reviews) , 11 Sep 2011Like all great Dystopian science fiction, Soylent Green is unremittingly bleak. The themes of overpopulation, pollution and finally cannibalism show a world on the brink of destruction.
Charlton Heston plays Robert Thorn, a police officer who, after investigating the murder of a rich lawyer, becomes embroiled in a conspiracy that undermines the entire fragile world that Soylent Green takes place in. Moments of great sadness, particularly the heartbreaking scene where Thorn sees stock footage of the world before are dampened slightly by some dull melodrama and dated fight scenes. Perhaps the most troubling thing about the film is its treatment of women, who are frequently referred to as furniture and take no important roles within the film. However on the whole Soylent Green is a well paced, thought provoking science fiction vehicle with brains and a gut-wrenching climax that in our modern world, is maybe even more relevant now than when it was released in 1973.- Was this review helpful to you?

Classic Dystopia-esque film
By a customer , 01 Sep 2011If you like films that are about a dystopian society, this is for you. It gives an interesting look into the future, into a world that hasn't worked.
The only problem with it is, that it is a thinker - not a lot actually happens. It challenges you, and makes you think, but no action goes on.- Was this review helpful to you?

Good Ending
By VickiMihn (40 reviews) from Warrington , 20 Aug 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
I'm a big fan of films surrounding the theme of 'dystopia'/future society/how it can all go wrong and Soylent Green did not disappoint.
I felt the character's weren't quite as good as in 1984, a film much along the same lines, but it was enjoyable nonetheless.
Really good ending to the film and would recommend people give it a watch, especially fans of cinema concerning these themes.- Was this review helpful to you?
