I bought this series as soon as it came out, I had never watched it on MTV but had downloaded the trailer for the series and knew I would like it, and I did! I like how it kicks off straight after the first movie and can get right into the action without having to go through once again how he became Spiderman. The blend of 2D and 3D makes for superb eye candy, as does the very lifelike motions of the characters. When Spiderman is in action we see some really cool moves, and you can tell the animators really had fun using this electronic medium to do things that we would never see in the movie. The humour is also there, and not just on a children?s level, far from it. One example is when Spiderman says 'er...that never happens'after suffering an embarrassing premature web shooting incident :)
Another point I would like to make is the fact that Michael Clarke Duncan does the voice of kingpin and he also plays him in the Daredevil movie. I just thought that was really cool, and maybe would link to Daredevil and Spiderman meeting in this new animated series as they have done previously when the Spiderman stories have been told on countless other media formats.
I don't think this is trying to be a link between the two movies directly though, however where this series ends seems to be on a similar note that we see in the new movie, so maybe there was more liaising with the film people that I thought. However some of the characters in this series (namely the lizard guy) I can't help but think would be ideal for future Spiderman movies, so maybe they have taken certain liberties. I could be wrong though.
All in all a great series, superbly animated and very entertaining. I highly recommend this series to any Spiderman/Comic book fans who can enjoy a good cartoon! I can't wait for the (hopefully in the making) second series. Set after Spiderman 2 perhaps? That would make sense.
I rented this thinking that it would be the series that was created back in the 90's. I was a little disappointed when it turned up. I realised I had made a mistake and this was in fact the short-lived MTV series created after the new film. Regardless, I wanted to keep an open mind and was interested to see how the cartoon had been updated using 3D animation. After all it had the marvel seal of approval and new is always better right? I was again disappointed. Compared to the previous series I had initially expected, the storyline was dismal. There is no character development at all other than what had been set-up by the film. Because of this the overall impression is lazy writing. Added to this the whole show seemed to be living in the shadow of the movie. There was no introduction of iconic Spiderman villains and instead there are throwaway character from the off. I am always of the opinion that animation is sometimes under appreciated for being worthwhile and with shows like this being created you can see why. Regarding the animation I decided to keep watching. Again previously some 3D had been used in the 90’s version that could have worked but always felt a little out of place. Some of the sense during action and Spiderman moving was extremely good in this MTV show. Atmosphere was also created and well maintain. But, the general acting of the normal people looked unfinished and unnatural. I would not recommend this as essential watching for any fans of the franchise. The fact that it was made for MTV I think speaks volumes. Insult to injury, there is poor soundtrack that is just incidental. The attempts of mature subject merely feels tacked on and does attempt to deal with any deeper social commentary like the original comics did from time to time. Can I say that this is not for a younger audience at all as there is no moral inclination to balance it out. Avoid this New Animated Series and see if you can find the 1994 series. The animation may have aged a little, but for the fact they invested in the important aspects i.e. storyline and character development I could forgive them. New technology doesn’t mean better.
