Based on the classic Marvel Comics series, Sam Raimi's SPIDER-MAN deftly details the origin of the web-slinging superhero. When awkward New York City teenager Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) attends a class field trip to a laboratory, he gets bitten by a genetically altered spider while taking photos of his longtime crush, the .. Thanks in part to legal battles, Marvel Comics' much-loved superhero has taken his time to reach the big screen. This fantasy action adventure was initially intended as a James Cameron vehicle, but the project finally went to Darkman director — and self-confessed Spider-Man fan — Sam Raimi. His vision sticks close to the character's comic-book roots with the creation of a colourful, visually inspired frolic that's bubbling with energy and gleefully tongue-in-cheek, yet edged with pathos. Lead actor Tobey Maguire is unusual but inspired casting, exuding boy-next-door charm as the clandestine teen avenger (Kirsten Dunst is credible, too, as love interest Mary Jane Watson). Indeed, it's Maguire's intense likeability that helps paper over potential weaknesses such as the odd disappointing set piece. As for the all-important villain, Willem Dafoe not only looks the part as the Green Goblin — equalling Jack Nicholson's Joker — he brings some welcome gravitas to an already credible venture. Spider-Man is an effortless, intelligent entertainment, and a fabulous, fun-filled start to an obvious franchise.
"...Raimi does know his genre and has a lot of fun with the always gratifying makeover element....[Maguire] seems the only choice to play Peter, imbuing the character with intelligence, sensitivity, affability, strength, humor and edginess..."
"...Chemistry between Maguire and the winning Dunst is excellent....[A] standout supporting turn is served up by J.K. Simmons, who brilliantly catches his pieces' comic book origins..."
Some films in the world can be hyped up
when they don't deserve it and that's
what i thought about Spiderman before i
saw it. i expected it to be just okay
but not brilliant, how wrong i was.
having waited till 2004 to finally see this movie on dvd it was well worth it.
the movie may have main villain named
The Green Goblin who resemebles villain from Power Rangers but this movie is super cool. basically, Peter Parker [ Toby Maguire] is this high school student who is bullied
for being different. he lusts for the girl next door Mary Jane Watson [ Kirsten Dunst] the love of his life.
then one day at high school trip to
the manhattan museum he is bitten by genetically modified super spider and becomes half mutant half human superman.
he decides to use his new powers for his own personal gain but after terrible tragedy he decides to use his powers to vanquish evil under the name: Spiderman!
he might have chance of winning over MJ [ Mary Jane's short name] while this goes on his best friend Harry Osborne [ James Franco]'s father Norman Osborne [ Willem Dafoe]has signed contract for an extro- skeleton design and they need human volounteer for an experiment to enhance human potential for the military. however, something turns drastically wrong and the experiment [ which Norman has tested himself] causes Norman to turn insane due to the gamma
radiation in the lab. now like Spiderman, Norman is stronger and more powerful than ever. however, he uses his new super powers to become the evil
villain The Green Goblin and invade
Newyork City. so it's up to Spiderman to save the day. one of the finest movies ever made with Toby Maguire in the role of Spiderman/Peter Parker he just IS Peter Parker and just IS Spiderman he is perfect. Kirsten Dunst is not exactly like in the comics but
now i can't imagine anyone else in the role. same goes for cliff roberts and rosemary harris who fit very well into the role of Peter's Uncle Ben and Aunt Mey Parker. Willem Dafoe won the role over Nicholas Cage and John Malkovich and i'm glad considering he IS The Green Goblin/Norman Osborne. i know i say IS a lot but this is such great piece of casting with director Sam Raimi and screenwriter David Koepp joining forces was the result of superhero classic. Bruce Campbell [ from Sam Raimi's Evil Dead] has his own cameo in the movie too. see this movie, it's superb with MARVELlous character development. i highly reccomend.
Readers of marvel comics have been waiting for this movie for years and even with the disaster that was the 70's series effort we had high expectations.we were not let down.
he looks great,he moves just how we imagined he would and we didnt end up with third rate cheesy actors.
however, what happened to the old 'web cartridges' and science wizz inventions that peter was always working on in the comics?.That and the fact that you just dont get enough of the web-slinging are the only bad points here.
Well scripted,SFX are stunning, some good performances in true comic book ham it up style and a wet t-shirt competition winner make this a must see.
Very average story but found it easy enough to watch. Nothing taxing here but a nice romance going on for us softies to enjoy. Only watched it because I heard Spiderman 2 was very good and wanted to get up to speed. Presume Spiderman 2 is much better.
Adults young at heart will enjoy this film too.
Poor Spiderman, - who would be a hero who doesnt want to be one?
Chill out and enjoy instead of all the long faces.
Moral: If you dont want to be a hero, dont get bitten by posh spiders - after all, it could have got worse - he could have grown 8 legs!!
This is a good film that could have done with a large fanged injection of levity!

I saw this at the cinema, and had forgotton how good it was. Tobey Maguire is brilliant! So much better than X-Men 1 or 2, and way superior to any of the more recent Batman films. If you're looking for a high brow, serious, well scripted and deeply thought out film, then don't rent it. But if you want a fun ride, with great effects, fab characters, and a foxy dude swinging about New York in a red and blue lycra suit, then rent it now!
Not good at all. Willem was dreadful in this and it is a poor immitation of the far better remakes of the old cartoon/comic book series. Kirsten was the only redeeming factor...

Spiderman the movie does for the Comic what the Original Batman Movie did for Batman.
Lets only hope that the sequels are just as good and not unfortunatly like the Sequels for Batman. If you liked The First Batman Movie you will love this.
A little bit of escapism. Superb special effects, and Willem Defoe plays a great Baddy.
this film is brilliant if you love batman and x men and all those other comic book films but this one is the best than all the rest. i can't wait to see the second one.
*Minor plot spoiler*
I accidentally watched X Men 1 on hotel TV and was appalled by the formulaic tosh that was served up. I have to say that all the Batman movies just sent me to sleep. But Spiderman was surprisingly good, I'd give it 4.5 stars (if this system could flag half stars). For once it was a proper film rather than a straight comic book transposition, with some subtlety and nuance.
Tobey Maguire was excellent as the reluctant superhero, a great choice of actor who perfectly epitomises the shy, insecure, but sincere and empathetic boy next door. I'm not sure about Kirsten Dunst as the girl next door, she came pretty close to carrying it off, but looks just too damn gorgeous.
Willem Dafoe's Jekyll and Hyde doesn't quite work either, it really overdoes the comic book side of things, and the Green Goblin's antics were firmly into the realms of comic strip unbelievability.
A great (but short) contribution from J K Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson, the editor of the Daily Bugle. I had to rewind this bit and watch it again as I was laughing so hard the first time through - brilliant.
Finally and inevitably, Spiderman doesn't get the girl, but whyever not? Has the spider venom shrunken his libido to miniscule proportions? For no good reason that we are told, he walks away from the girl with a tear in his eye. Definitely abnormal behaviour that is, so far at least, the most inexplicable, although predictable, twist in the plot.

Critic-proof, comic-book entertainment that will trap large audiences with its spin of romance and action, though it could have done with a better (that is, badder) villain.
"...The filmmakers have succeeded in rejuvenating the character while staying faithful to his roots....Mr. Maguire seems at once knowing and vulnerable..."
