Most helpful review
slow and confusing but that's the point
By a customer from Lancaster, Lancs , 22 Apr 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
This movie shows just what fine actors Ralph Fiennes and Miranda Richardson are. Fiennes is the slow and bumbling ex mental patient trying to understand his surroundings after his release from hospital. Richardson plays several roles which draws the audience into the confusion in Spider's mind. The truth is distorted as the audience sees it all from his point of view and slowly finally understands what Spider cannot. Not a film for lovers of action and romance. It's stark and sad and moving and disturbing all together and parts of it had all the audience shifting extremely uncomfortably in their seats when I saw it at the cinema. Challenging but worthwhile.- Was this review helpful to you?

(54)Thought provoking onion
By 663322 (37 reviews) , 15 May 2013I watched this with some friends and we all came up with different conclusions. Interestingly we all related with different characters. This film has many layers of characters and thrills with an uncomfortable level of mania. Peel the story like a provoking onion.- Was this review helpful to you?

An interesting story that weaves a tangled web .
By twosoddingcats (214 reviews) from Kingston-upon-Thames , 04 Oct 2012Ralph Fiennes is absolutely outstanding as spider (the nickname his mother gives him) .recently released from a psychiatric hospital (you later realise hes deeply disturbed and has committed a terrible crime). Great ensemble cast (Miranda Ricardson, Lynn Redgrave, Gabriel Byrne). Not to be missed.- Was this review helpful to you?

Disturbing, touching, gentle, one of Cronenburg's best
By bobshaw5 (21 reviews) , 08 Feb 2012Great story about madness, sadness, mystery, with one of the best acting performances of all time of the mumbling, incoherent mad central character. Brilliant.- Was this review helpful to you?

Not terribly gripping or interesting.
By Onlyests (57 reviews) , 08 Nov 2011Seriously, this is poorly acted. Fiennes cannot act out an insane person. All his characters feel slightly awkward, and 'not quite' up to scratch. Would have been better if Christopher Walken or Jack Nicholson would have been cast in the part.- Was this review helpful to you?

Gabriel Byrne's performance deserves more acclaim!
By Poorly (3 reviews) , 23 Aug 2011Great acting from Fiennes and Richardson, but especially from Byrne who had to play a character seen from two perspectives simultaneously. His performance deserves more acclaim.
Cronenberg's direction is subtle and the whole movie is understated yet powerful.
..and the plot is not that confusing...just pay attention.- Was this review helpful to you?
