This charming romantic comedy touched a chord with audiences around the world and propelled its stars, Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah, along with director Ron Howard, to Hollywood's front rank. Hannah plays the innocent mermaid who docks on dry land to locate the boy (now the grown-up Hanks) she saved from drowning many years ago. Splash is a delightful '80s comedy that puts a mermaid in New York. Madison (Hannah) is the mermaid who has come looking for a man she last saw decades earlier when he was almost drowned off Cape Cod. What ensues is a well paced love story with the normal impediments to happiness that must be overcome.
Daryl Hannah projects an innocence that is endearing and which gives rise to much of the humour. Coming from a world without music or television (or legs) she struggles to get up to speed. She plays perfectly off Tom Hanks who supplies high precision comic timing and between them they convince us that they could fall in love at first sight.
John Candy brings bombastic support as Hanks' brother along with Eugene Levy as a paranoid scientist.
I first saw this film years and years ago, and it's been a firm favourite ever since, with everyone in my family. Tom Hanks is lovely - as usual! - and Daryl Hannah is just so heart breaking in her role as a mermaid. Thoroughly recommended!
