Spy Game

Robert Redford stars as veteran CIA agent Nathan Muir in this thriller from Tony Scott (TOP GUN, ENEMY OF THE STATE). Set in 1991, Muir expects his last day before retirement to be an easy one. Instead, he finds that his protege, Tom Bishop (Brad Pitt), is being held on espionage charges in a Chinese prison will be executed in 24 hours. A seasoned agent, Muir has played spy games for a long time and quickly realizes that the CIA may not be acting in Bishop's best interest. Even as an agency committee is grilling Muir, he is secretly working to secure his former charge's freedom. Action-packed flashbacks establish the relationship between the two men: their first meeting during the Vietnam War, Muir's recruitment of Bishop following the war, Bishop's training and early missions in Berlin, and an important operation in Beirut. Similarly, the flashbacks trace the evolution of Bishop from an eager, brand-new agent in 1975 to a disillusioned veteran in the mid-1980s who is at odds with his mentor, Muir. This last layer of conflict adds extra suspense to SPY GAME, as Muir must decide whether to help his old friend or take the easy way out.

Looking for all the world like father and son, cinema's two golden “boys”, Robert Redford and Brad Pitt, team up for this daftly implausible but diverting spy yarn from Enemy of the State director Tony Scott. Redford's the old pro set to retire from the CIA. Pitt's the boy-wonder protégé banged up in a Chinese hellhole after failing to free old flame Catherine McCormack from custody. The 24 hours prior to Pitt's execution see Redford reminiscing about his partnership before running rings round his oblivious CIA superiors with little more than a glue stick, a marker pen and some sticky-backed plastic in an attempt to save his friend's life. It's like spy-gaming, Blue Peter-style. Flashy if a little over-elaborate in its direction, Spy Game doesn't quite deliver on the promise of its superstar pairing, but Redford, as always, is a delight to watch.

  • "...Viewers may be justifiably dazzled by the film's grand tour of exotic locations....Surely for most filmgoers the appeal of SPY GAME will lie in the Redford-Pitt pairing. Both look smashing..."

    Intriguing fast moving action

This a film that needs to be viewed with a cinema surround sound system to get the full value of it, as this really makes the action shots so much better, especially with the helecopters flying over your head. Redwood at his usual laconic best.

It's been six years since Brad Pitt first played Rusty Ryan in Ocean's 11. He was in his late 30s then and he'd been a star for a decade - ever since giving Geena Davis the ride of her life in Thelma and Louise. (How different things might have been if William Baldwin hadn't turned down that role - it's still one of the indelible moments in Pitt's career.) The movies had been hit and miss - they usually are - but he had made the transition from hot young thing to bone fide leading man with... Read more
