  • My favourite Billy Wilder movie

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Mixing screwball comedy with the most extreme drama has always been a tricky thing to do. The most recent and controversial attempt at this has been 'Life is Beautiful', which was also set in a German prison camp. There are few directors who possess the skill required to do it successful, but fortunately Billy Wilder was one of those few.

You could argue that Stalag 17 invented a whole new genre of war comedy -- it served as the inspiration for 'Hogan's Heroes', which in turn served as the inspiration for 'M*A*S*H'. We join a group of American POWs trying to keep up their spirits and live a decent life in a Nazi prison camp. They find out that somebody in their barracks is a German spy, but who? William Holden turns in a commendable oscar-winning performance, which is interesting as apparently he neither liked the character or the original play, and was forced into taking the role by his studio. There is a mixture of fine comic and dramatic actors who make up some intriguing characters here.

I enjoyed 'Sunset Boulevard', 'Seven Year Itch' and 'Some Like It Hot' but I honestly think that this beats them all. The only downside is that Marilyn Monroe isn't in this one. Anyway, regardless of that, it's definitely something everyone should see.

For a grim and limited setting, this is a very entertaining and engaging film. Lots of characters and funny moments along with mystery and suspense.

In my opinion, a film's plot is 80 percent important, which is why I was made up with this.

It had great suspense and a good story the whole way through. The actor who played sefton was very good.

One thing I would say is that I thought that the hammy comedy bits were well out of place-sort of like bad sgt bilko gags. There's only a couple of them though, and that's nit picking really. Well recommended!

  • Class!

As a dyed in the wool Billy Wilder fan and avid William Holden watcher, this film was a dream come true. A humour filled, who-dunnit, war film. They don't make them like this anymore. You will not be disappointed.

  • Dated Brilliance

This may have been all the rage when stars and directors could never go wrong. In its period Holden performance may have warranted an Oscar. However in today's cinema it looks dated with nothing substantial to say. Holden's performance is nothing like it was in Sunset Boulevard, Bridge on River Kwai or the Wild Bunch, and Billy Wilder's other works like Fortune Cookie, The Apartment and The front page have stood the test of time but not this film. There isn't much depth to Holden's character. The supporting cast tries but fail to inject much life into the story. The prison guard and the commandant seem like caricatures. Bridge on River Kwai may have been set in a different prison camp but essentially basic character plot is the same and everyone's performance including Holden's is much grittier. If you are interested in cinema and actors and directors works, then this film still warrants viewing. However you will wonder afterwards what was all the fuss about the film and Holden's performance.
