Absolutely love this film! Robert de Niro is fab in anything (and just a little bit hot!) and I think he excelled in this. He plays an illiterate cook in a bakery factory who gets fired when his boss finds out. He can't get a decent job and he's forced to put his elderly father, with whom he lives, into a home as he can't afford to pay the rent (Cue tears!). He finally swallows his pride and asks a woman (played by Fonda) who works in the factory to teach him to read and write which she reluctantly does. This poor woman has domestic issues of her own but takes de Niro under her wing.
Best line in the movie? When Fonda goes thru the alphabet and asks for a word beginning with 'w' and de Niro looks at her and says 'woman'. Swoon!!
It might be a bit sugary for some but I think it's fab!
