This is one of the darker Star Treks, set as it is during the major part of the Dominion invasion of the Alpha Quadrant. With the Dominion and their Cardassian allies firmly back in charge of DS9, Terok Nor, things are looking bleak for the Federation with defeat on virtually every front. Ben Sisko has been made Ops Officer at Fleet Command and command of the Defiant had devolved to Jadzia Dax much to Worf's discomfort as he served aboard General Martok's ship. With Bajor officially neutral, Major Kira Neris finds herself working for the detested Gul Ducat, who, alarmingly, seems keen on the major. Odo finds things... interesting when he is joined by another Founder, leading to complications between himself and Kira. Also left behind on the station is Jake Sisko, employed as a correspondant. The stories in this series cover the crew of the Defiant as she undertakes missions against the Dominion, Kira, Quark and Jake as they come to terms with the occupation. They vary between out and out war stories and the more usual soap opera type life together stories, the latter becoming more common once the Federation had retaken the station. Another theme common in DS9 stories that is relatively rare in Star Trek, is the mystical nature of the Prophets and how that affects Bajor, and Sisko in particular. As always, Avery Brooks is very powerful as Benjamin Sisko, especially in the more emotionally intense moments.
