Star Trek fans may have grumbled, but this Leonard Nimoy-directed instalment is easily the most entertaining of the spin-offs from the cult TV series. After three impressive but rather po-faced adventures, the Enterprise regulars got the chance to let their hair (what was left of it) down a little for this hugely enjoyable trek. This time around, the crew has to travel back to 1980s San Francisco to free a couple of whales that can save the Earth from a destructive space probe. William Shatner gets to romance whale expert Catherine Hicks, although his comic double act with Nimoy is a lot more fun, and, while there is little in the way of traditional sci-fi spectacle, the crew clearly relishes the opportunity to poke fun at the idiosyncrasies of life in modern-day California.

    • Radio Times
  • "...There's something rather touching about the sight of that same old Enterprise crew on the streets of San Francisco....[Nimoy's] sincerity is unmistakable, and it counts for a lot..."

THE BEST STAR TREK FILM OF ALL

This is my favourite of all the Star Trek films. It made me stop and think in 1986, and it still does now. This is a good DVD transfer but it is done from quite a damaged print. When are DVD producers going to stop doing this and use decent copies of the films to work from.

On a more positive note, I like the menu structutre, once you're past the copyright warnings it's straight into the film, great for people who actually want to watch the film rather than sit through loads of rubbish before you can get into it!

    Hmmm... The best ST film???

Voyage home has to be the start of the downward slope for trek quality. As a trek fan (neither trekker nor trekkie - I just enjoy watching!) I found that, although watchable and far from the worst of the films (has to be No.5), the humor and mucking about gets in the way.

I agree that it is a novel idea and certainly making an important comment on the preservation of an important species (all flora and fawna of Earth are important!), but there's too much humour for my taste.

Watch out for Scotty's legendary typing skills!! - use two fingers and stick to the same keys!!!
