The Star Trek movie series goes supernova with an outstanding episode directed by Nicholas Meyer, who also gave the first sequel, The Wrath of Khan, massive hit-and-myth credibility. Mirroring world news events of the time (the Soviet Union's dissolution), Meyer crafts a near perfect blend of humanistic messages, affectionate lampooning, epic visuals and fairy-tale imagination as the classic Enterprise crew encounters treachery during prospective peace negotiations with the Klingons. Clever Shakespearean touches also heighten the drama.

The Fall of the Klingon (Iron) Curtain.

The 6th film in the Star Trek series see's our creaking hero's plunder Shakespeare and the current events of the time, namely the fall of the Iron curtain and the collapse of the Soviet Union, for insperation. The formal jousting of the early scenes must have more than a ring of truth about them, I wonder how many diplomats watched those scene with a wry grin on their faces?

For once in a Trek film, William Shatner is given a run for his money in the performance of the film coming from the good doctor,' I'm a doctor, I was trying to save him', played by the now sadly departed DeForrest Kelly. For a change, the Romulans stick their oar in with a touch of mischief making that the old politbuero would have been proud of, throw in a spy hunt aboard the Enterprise, inprisonment in a Klingon Gulag and the parallels are there for all to see.

This all makes for a cracking story, some great action, David Bowie's missus as a shape shifter, a Christian Slater cameo, some great tounge in cheek humour and you have one of the top three Trek film. Great stuff, go and enjoy.
