The Fall of the Klingon (Iron) Curtain.
By MachineHead (19 reviews) from Wakefield , 28 Jan 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
The 6th film in the Star Trek series see's our creaking hero's plunder Shakespeare and the current events of the time, namely the fall of the Iron curtain and the collapse of the Soviet Union, for insperation. The formal jousting of the early scenes must have more than a ring of truth about them, I wonder how many diplomats watched those scene with a wry grin on their faces?
For once in a Trek film, William Shatner is given a run for his money in the performance of the film coming from the good doctor,' I'm a doctor, I was trying to save him', played by the now sadly departed DeForrest Kelly. For a change, the Romulans stick their oar in with a touch of mischief making that the old politbuero would have been proud of, throw in a spy hunt aboard the Enterprise, inprisonment in a Klingon Gulag and the parallels are there for all to see.
This all makes for a cracking story, some great action, David Bowie's missus as a shape shifter, a Christian Slater cameo, some great tounge in cheek humour and you have one of the top three Trek film. Great stuff, go and enjoy.- Was this review helpful to you?

By cheesekake (1282 reviews) from uk , 26 Jun 2012as always with Star Trek its the sort of film that is timeless, i. e. you could watch over and over and still enjoy it.

Best of the Trek movies.
By AberdonianMan (1 review) from UK , 16 Jan 2011The best of the Star Trek movies, though the Wrath of Khan runs it close.
A fantastic storyline that mirrored the events of its time- the end of the Soviet Union (Klingon Empire) and the uneasy peace that followed between East and West (the Federation). The movie is full of sabotage plots, double dealing and even looks into Kirk's near irrational hatred of the Kinglons.
Visually the most impressive Star Trek movie after the first one and some of the sequences are up there with the original Star Wars movies.
None of the subsequent Star Trek movies come close to topping this one, including the recent 're-imagining'.- Was this review helpful to you?

DISCOVERED COUNTRY
By a customer from TUNBRIDGE WELLS, ENGLAND , 18 Nov 2010Wonderful science-fiction movie that veers into political satire and self-parody. The plot makes little sense but makes little matter because the film is designed for sheer entertainment purposes - especially Star Trek fans. For anyone familiar with the clichés of the tv series the plot will be predictably-enjoyable and the performances from the cast familiarly-comfortable.
In truth, this is a metaphorical look at the end of the Cold War which is perfectly suited to the optimistic and pacifistic nature of the tv series; leaving one with a good uplift of one's morale with a story of a peace dividend resulting from the collapse of the Klingon Empire. One of the better Star Trek films although not as good as The Wrath of Khan.- Was this review helpful to you?
