Star Trek 8 - First Contact

The Borg have once again targeted the Federation; this time, their devious plot threatens not only the present, but Earth's past as well. While Commander Riker, Deanna Troi, and Geordi La Forge work hard on the surface of 21st-century Earth to keep history on schedule, the rest of the crew plays a desperate game with the genetically-networked attackers above the planet, matching former Locutus Jean-Luc and cybernetically-naive Data against the erotic, mechanized cunning of the Borg queen. Resistance is futile. Academy Awards nominations: 1--Best Makeup.

The Borg travel back in time to sabotage that pivotal moment in Earth's destiny when we first made contact with an alien race in this first-rate adventure. What else can Captain Picard do except follow and sort things out? Epic in scope, grandiose in emotional sweep and featuring awesome special effects, this is captivating science fiction packed with ideas, thrills, in-jokes and tense action. It's all expertly marshalled by director Jonathan Frakes (who also plays Commander Riker) with a keen visual eye and an inherent understanding of the history and importance of the series.

  • "...A smashingly exciting sci-fi adventure that ranks among the very best....Stewart once again comports himself with all the gravity and panache you would expect from a Shakespearean-trained actor..."

With the Earth under threat from the Borg, the Enterprise is ordered to patrol the Romulan Neutral Zone. It seemed that Starfleet Command had some doubts over the reliability of its commander but Picard and his crew decide to disobey after the Borg ship broke through and threatened Earth directly. The Enterprise arrived just in time stop the Borg cube but an escape module disappeared into the past leaving the Enterprise orbiting an Assimilated Earth. The past had been altered and the Enterprise had to make sure things happened correctly. Traveling back in time they found themselves in 2063 in a world still recovering from world war. A time that saw Earth's first warp capable space ship fly. Picard and his crew must make sure that history happens the way it was supposed to. This is one of the more technologically ambitious of the Trek films as battle is joined with the Borg on the skin of the Enterprise herself and the two sides have to simulate zero gee combat. It is quite revisionist as well, changing the nature of the Borg Collective.
