Pros:
- Excellent effects
- Good performances by the new cast (except Chekov), taking their own slant on the original actors/actresses, especially Bones.
- Good action sequences
- Leonard Nimoy (despite it feeling like he didn't really have to be there)
Cons:
- Blatant and completely out of place product placement- Nokia ring tone? Most people dont even have that now, let alone 300ish years from now.
- Unbelievable science (even for a Star Trek film)
- Ignorance of 40 years of Star Trek history
- Badly written villain
- 'Empty' plot, very non-star-trek - stop the bad guy from destroying earth. Thats it.
- Kirk 'just happens' to be marooned on a planet which 'just happens' to be 1 mile from where real Spock is hiding in a cave [doing nothing apparently] which 'just happens' to be near a outpost which 'just happens' to be where Scotty is. Really?
- J.J. Abrams tries and fails to avoid stealing stuff from Star Wars, which is no bad thing, it just it doesn't quite fit in with Star Trek. (Ice planet, Bad guy destroying planet with big laser, bar fights etc)
- Engineering set looks like an oil refinery, especially compared to the iBridge.
Big fans prepare for a somewhat empty feeling, but newcomers will no doubt enjoy it. The new film is a good action film, and would no doubt have been successful as a stand alone generic summer blockbuster, but it does feel like an action film with the 'Star Trek' name attached to it just to earn more money.
