A box office fizzle in the US, Stardust should do better on this side of the pond, where the mix of Monty Python-ish silliness, surrealism and romantic derring do is in our bones. Not just... read more »
Simple the worst film ever! Narnia, Lord of the Rings are so much better! What was DeNiro thinking off! Dont waste your money and time on it! Simple awful! There are no words to describe how bad this movie is! I dont know what movie the people who have written reviews so far saw but it wasnt Stardust.
This is grand adult fairytale of a film - think 'The Princess Bride' for the 21st century. Same rich mythology, same wonderfully drawn characters, same easy humour deftly blended with drama and, of course, hand-to-hand combat.
'Stardust' tells the story of a young man who travels into another world to retrieve a fallen star, in the hope of winning the hand of the prettiest girl in the village (who also happens to be a mean priss with a pole up her a*** - but hey, she IS really, really good looking). A cracking adventure ensues, with the usual obligatory fantasy elements including feuding princes, witches, enchantments and the most hilarious swordfight you will see for years.
The story's mythology is beautifully woven. Sparkling script, both touching and amusing, with acting good enough to do it justice. The notable exception is David Bren- er, Ricky Gervais. Much as I enjoyed 'The Office' and 'Extras', it is terribly jarring to see Gervais doing the same schtick here, albeit in a funny costume. For me, his self-conscious appearance momentarily blew a hole in the elaborate fantasy of the story. However, his screen time is mercifully short and does not detract from the movie for long. Back to the sword fighting!
Altogether an absolutely fantastic film, the like of which has rarely been seen in recent years. Just watch it - if you have a soul, you won't be disappointed.
Ricky Gervais is back on the big screen this week with The Invention of Lying. The premise – in case you’ve missed the ads – is that in a world where everyone automatically speaks the truth, our Ricky is about to tell it like it isn’t. This is his second starring role in a Hollywood comedy, after last year’s Ghost Town. This time, though, Gervais has much more at stake. He co-wrote the script and co-directed (both with Matthew Robinson), and he’s also a co-pr Read more
