In this visually creative space adventure from the team that would go on to give the world INDEPENDENCE DAY and GODZILLA, a timid, glasses-wearing Egyptologist (Spader) uncovers an ancient portal to another planet and is dispatched there forthwith--along with blundering, clodfooted government troops (led by Russell). Aliens colonised ancient Egypt through a space-time portal, according to this derivative yet hugely enjoyable cosmic adventure. A shameless marriage between Indiana Jones and the ideas of Erich Von Daniken, its clunkier plot details are neatly disguised by director Roland Emmerich's flair for epic action (he did make Independence Day, after all). James Spader is terrific as the code-cracking archaeologist who accompanies soldier Kurt Russell across the universe to fight galactic tyrant Jaye Davidson, who's clearly wearing the frocks The Crying Game couldn't afford. Stargate is simple in execution, yet classic in the nostalgic way it evokes the feel of vintage 1940s serials, with Emmerich doing an outstanding job, combining plot strands from literature and other films of the genre — even the title is borrowed, from Stanley Kubrick's 2001: a Space Odyssey — with some imaginative special effects and impressive visuals. One of the film's best achievements in this area is its depiction of what it might actually feel and look like being hurtled across the universe at the speed of light. Emmerich's film may not be a lot of things, but as an action-packed, science-fiction rollercoaster ride, it's fabulous fun.

Approached with a generous spirit and a vacant mind, this bombastic sci-fi epic is hugely enjoyable. Having deciphered... read more on Time Out
A truly corny plot that stretches the bounds of belief, this film will appeal to those who will accept anything to escape real life. I usually do, but this was going too far! Spader starts fine as an intellegent archaeologist, then turns into a bumbling idiot, so no character continuity there. I haven't seen the TV series, so perhaps that was what I was missing, for the film didn't develop several touched-on themes. But I left it with a feeling that there are many much better sci-fi films to spend part of your life watching.
Read the above Time Out review then toss it out the window. This movie is great. Good chemistry between the leads, nice story and effects but you don't have to think about it. The movie just flows so well.
A well remembered favourite (I had only watched it once before renting it and enjoyed it just as much as the first time).
I liked this film, the missus loved it. Good, fast paced, sci-fi action. The missus is a bit of a fan of the TV series, but had never seen the film. It was better than she was expecting.
An ok plot which was executed very poorly. Cheesy sets and acting. Nonsensical scripts, an effeminate child ruler. Boring as hell if you ask me. I wonder what did I miss that people would give it 3 stars or more.
I forgave their lousy cgi given the date of the movie. but even then it still is at best 2 stars for me.
What can i say about Stargate... Thought provoking in many ways and allows the imagination in all of us to run wild.
History, Gadgets, Aliens, Nukes,... what else do you need from a film.
A must see in my opinion.

After watching the TV series episode after episode the film finally helps everything click into place. This film maybe a little more slow moving then the TV series but gives you the background to how the whole Stargate Program came about.
Good watching if your into that sorta film or like the the TV series.
Loved every monute of this film. A great evening's entertainment

This will keep you interested from start to finish must be about the best available!
true sci-fi entertainment, laughs, crys, intrigue, quality sound and soundtrack, a true classic, and the basis for Independance Day (ID4) which was originally set as the sequal, but got overhauled completely for a new market, shame.
It was as good to watch as the first time, excellent stuff. A good all family film.

An old-fashioned gung-ho space opera, recycling threadbare themes, which unexpectedly found favour with the public.
