Most helpful review Stephen King's Cujo

  • Nice idea, suffocating length...

Cujo, based on the novel by Stephen King, is the story of a rabid dog that turns into a monstrous beast after having been bit by a bat. A mother and her child are forced to stay in a car for three days and nights for fear of the dog. The idea seems appealing, and indeed it could've been a great film. However, that's all you get. The idea hasn't been extended for the film medium, and re-occuring elements get very tedious and unneccesary. Performances, however, are strong and the music is average. It's one of those films that can only really be seen once - and sometimes you have to force yourself for that.

You can almost hear every old lady with a Persian cat on her lap tutting as she watches Stephen King’s ‘Cujo’ and saying something like ‘I told you dogs were trouble.’ Here a lovably, cuddly St Bernard doggy gets bitten by a rabid bat… with disastrous consequences. Without wishing to spoil it for you, the dog goes on a rampage. The dog. Just a dog. Not a demon dog, or a dog with superpowers and laser-eyes. Just a dog. It’s not a bad idea, but stretching it out for an hour and a half is about an hour too long. There are some pretty traumatic scenes involving a young boy watching some pretty grisly events unfold before his eyes (hopefully the young actor didn’t require too much counselling to get over them!), but, one the whole, there are too many sub-plots that are simply there to fill time because just having one angry dog isn’t enough to fill an entire film. Not bad in parts, but you may have to keep your eyes open through some of the ‘non dog’s dinner scenes.’

  • Thrilling and heartbreaking in one movie!

When a film has animals in it they usually say that the American Humane Association monitored it. Who cares about that? I wanted to know if someone was monitoring it for the child! They couldn't remake this film. That child was brilliant. I'm sure he was genuinely terrified. Screaming he was. Very real. They couldn't get a kid to do that now. They'd be too precious about child stars. I was impressed by how much of the book was in it. It really was similar, right down to the misty morning when Brett goes out to say goodbye to the dog. Although it is interesting that they shaved so much out. The film is mainly the two in the car, but the source material had more character stuff about the wife's trip to her sister's which could have filled it out and added that something. I mean, they invested 45 mins into the early story before she got to Camber's and didn't really do much with it. But hey, I screamed out loud, and that rarely happens. It is really edge of the seat stuff that has aged really well and is just as scary as I remember, watching it as a 12 year old.
