Despite its unappealing title, this is an incredibly touching and sophisticated film about post-divorce family life. As the girlfriend of divorcee Ed Harris, ambitious fashion photographer Julia Roberts starts off on the wrong foot when she meets his family. Attempting to woo his two children, she finds herself competing with their perfect mother Susan Sarandon. However, when Sarandon falls seriously ill, the women must reappraise their priorities. Strong performances, which are not afraid to be unsympathetic, and unpredictable narrative twists make this far from your average sentimental family drama, and viewing requires a large quantity of tissues.
It is sometimes difficult to imagine what Hollywood scriptwriters would do without a terminal illness to fall back on: it provides opportunity for sentimentality, redemption, reconciliation and big gestures, all of which are too much in evidence here.

this film is based on the true story on a mothers love for her children. the ups and down of the storyline keep you hooked till the very end and the emotional scenes between a mother and her son leave youre bottom jaw shaking until the credits roll.
Somewhat shmultzy tale of relationships that rebound from a divorce. Excellent cast helps raise the bar - fortunately we're spared the inevitable ending.
This film shows great acting skills revolving around a great down to earth plot facing a lot of modern issues which some us have to face. Not one to miss out on.

This is a film that makes you cry it even makes a tear in a mans eye and by watching it it helps you relise whilst you got some one you should love them for who they are and no matter how many times you watch it you still have to reach for the tissues.
I seem to be in the minority but i thought this film lacked something. It's usually the sort of film I like, but dispite 2 great actress's in the lead roles I failed to enjoy it.
I found the characters lacked substance and where very one dimensional. There was no background to the story, it just went from one scene to the next. I found the scene on christmas day moving but only because I have children and put myself in her(susan sarandon)place. To be honest i didn't care what happened to her, and she didn't seem that bothered either!
My 10 year old son had seen this and wanted me to watch it with him. Although I don't really like Julia Roberts (I thinks she is way overrated), he seemed very keen so we watched it together. Julia Roberts is the new girlfriend of Ed Harris' character, who is divorced from his wife, played by Susan Sarandon. The two young children of Ed and Susan are reluctant to accept Roberts as their 'stepmom'. Sarandon's character is dying of cancer and she plays the part with dignity. Roberts' character attempts to juggle her career as a photographer with her new role as a mother, whilst trying to win over the kids. There are some amusing moments and naturally some sentimental moments. I have to admit I enjoyed the film, and it is quite a good film to watch as a family.
but at least it was a change of genre for the main actor julia roberts.
a commentary of a unmarried couple with complications - the ex is dying of cancer..
all this on top of a professional women trying to make her mark in the creative photography market..
Could not get into this film, but I do like Julia Roberts.
this film was great vert sad a great reminder that sadly so many people in this country die every year of cancer
I watched this film with my eldest daughter and we both cried. It is a weepy film but really enjoyable too.

"...What is brilliant is the inspired combo of Sarandon's headlight eyes and Roberts' high-beam smile..."
