  • Masterly.

    [Highly rated reviewer]

I viewed this film with some trepidation, not being an especial enthusiast of Yasujiro Ozu's catalogue, to whom this director's films are often compared. And not having enjoyed Koreeda's earlier Afterlife.

But I loved this film. There is little narrative. Though it is not slow because the nuances of the characters' behaviour are so engrossing.

There is much to contemplate, whether the family dynamic, or the lingering atmosphere. A special mention for the character performances, which are skilled, and just plain enjoyable.

Those with a weakness for considered ensemble pieces (such as Happiness, You Can Count On Me, or Interiors) may take a great deal of pleasure from this one.

  • BITTERSWEET MEMORABLE FAMILY DRAMA

    Rated - 5.0 stars

Bittersweet portrait of 24 hours in the life of an extended family, gathered for a annual memorial for one of their departed kin. The film gradually reveals the scars that the death has left on all of them, even after twelve years. Beautiful with some memorable scenes it shows that families are the same the world over. A must see.

  • Slow and unengaging

Nicely shot but unfortunately it does not engage. The film generally consisted of in-family small talk with the threat of some attrition between the father and son of an average Japanese family. However, nothing seemed to really happen and there was no apparent plot or progression of the 'story'. One film where we wished we had turned off earlier instead of watching in the hope that something would happen. 1 hr a 45 mins of waiting! Perhaps it was best suited for a Japanese audience. 1 star at best!

  • A film that does justice to the complexity of family relationships

Still Walking captures the gathering of a Japanese family that only lasts an overnight. It is one of the subtlest film I've ever seen. It is not subtle in the sense of being symbolic, but in the sense that every minor detail of its characters' dialogues and manners hints at what the characters have in their minds -- their worries, their values, the conflicts in their minds, and the memories of past events that still shape their conscious and unconscious thoughts. We learn about the complexity of family relationships that can involve guilt, love, pain, regret, humiliation, the longing for inclusion and respect, and attempts to fill in the gap left by the dead in the hearts and minds of those who are living. These feelings mix to produce only subtle outward actions (which the characters occasionally display unknowingly).

It is a simple, quiet film without any unnecessary background music, nor anything that would around strong emotions. You won't cry watching this. But you're get a more nuanced feeling than simple sadness or pity or sympathy. Your feeling will almost be as complex as the characters'.

Really nice , it's a day in a family's life and is good to see how the typical Japanese family lives ,thinks and expects from their children.
