The only real problem with Stir of Echoes has nothing to do with the movie itself, but with unlucky coincidence. Adapted from a Richard Matheson novel, this film arrived around the same time as The Sixth Sense. Surface similarities made it suffer by cursory comparison and the competing film's phenomenal success. It's a pity, .. Read more

In the US, David Koepp's creepy supernatural tale was completely overshadowed by The Sixth Sense. However, while it isn't as smart or satisfying, it delivers a handful of extremely frightening moments and a credible performance from Kevin Bacon as a man haunted by startling visions. Using jolting cuts and stylised camerawork to evoke fear rather than contemporary, effects-driven shocks, Koepp immerses the audience in an atmospheric mystery involving hypnotism, psychic powers, a dead girl and Bacon's son, who seems to share his gift. The film's biggest flaw is an overcooked final half hour, as Bacon's obsessive, destructive hunt for answers becomes slightly ludicrous. The last scene is a real chiller, though.
Muddled supernatural thriller that is at its best when concentrating on the normal: the relationship of an unfulfilled working-class man, who is finding it difficult to cope with life, and his concerned wife.
"...The economical, fast-paced style and creepy mood are reminiscent of THE TWILIGHT ZONE -- for good reason....David Koepp's thriller matches the eeriest moments of the classic TV series..."
ok first of all i think maybe this is the movie that sixth sense should have been!!!! although the main thread of the story is a little obvious, there are enough aspects of this movie that keep you guessing and therefore keep you interested through out, right too the end.If you like thrillers/ghost stories then your gonna love this!!
I can't think why but for some reason this film reminds me of mystic river(could just be the location or something!!!)
Well worth a go!
A cross between the titles mentioned in my heading but unfortunately not meeting up to the standards each film reached. On one hand, you have spirit telling their story of wrongdoing and seeking retribution and on the other, you have a child star who is only too pleased that Dad can see 'them' also. An unusal way for father/son bonding but it does work for them so who am I to complain. An okay film with a supernatural edge but I'd suggest see the other films I've quoted for a better storyline and direction.
An intriguing ghost story with believable, down to earth characters. Nicely acted by all, especially Kevin bacon as the non-believer beset by psychic visions.

If you enjoyed 'The Sixth Sense' then this is the film for you. The director wastes little time (but very effectively) to introduce you to the main characters and quickly opens the doors on the suspense. The plot is decent, if slightly predictable. There isn't the same twists and turns as 'The Sixth Sense' but don't let this detract from what is still avery entertaining film. Kevin Bacon does extreme justice to the role of a normal family man, who has his world turned upside down by an innocent party trick. This is a must-see for any thriller fan.

In this supernatural thriller, Tom Witzky (Kevin Bacon) is a fairly typical working-class guy living in Chicago with his wife Maggie (Kathryn Erbe) and his son Jake (Zachary David Cope). One night at a party, Tom gets into a lively discussion with his sister-in-law, Lisa (Illeana Douglas), who believes in psychic communication and the power of hypnosis. He challenges Lisa to hypnotize him, and she plants in him a post-hypnotic suggestion to be more open-minded. But the results aren't quite what Lisa or Tom expected; Tom now senses an air of terrible dread throughout his house and is convinced that evil lurks just around the corner. He also sees the spirit of a girl from the neighborhood who disappeared months ago -- and Jake sees the spirit as well. Stir of Echoes was based on a novel by Richard Matheson, whose work inspired such disparate films as Somewhere in Time and The Incredible Shrinking Man; it was written and directed by David Koepp, who wrote the screenplays for Jurassic Park and Mission: Impossible.
The film entails normal family life with a single difference. The theme is constant and clues keep unfolding. You won't want to miss a thing as a conclusion is developed.

A wonderful film which I really enjoyed, a good story which was well acted. Hope to see more like in the future.
This movie was slow to start but got more intresting as it got more into it. its worth a watch I'd say
I've seen this film a few times now, and every time I watch it I still think it's a good movie. It puts you on the edge of your seat now and again, and keeps you guessing as to what is going to happen next - and I reckon Kevin Bacon plays his part really well. It's worth watching!
a brilliant film
it will have you gripped and jumpy
