This could have been a good prison drama. It could also have been a straightforward crime movie. Instead the complex nature of human mentality is laid bare. Robert De Niro is excellent and plays a role directly contrasted to 'Raging Bull' which will interest those who study his work. Edward Norton is typically effective and manages to pull all the right strings. It seems like Norton's incarcerated character is not really focused on freedom, he just enjoys controlling those around him. John Curran tests the human mind to see how it reacts to situation and the influence of relationships. Allusions to this can be found in the title sequence where audio samples relate to 'man's free will'. But ultimately my free will is not helping me stay awake.

This is a very good film, easy to watch with a good believable storyline. Keeps you engrossed throughout the duration of the film. De Niro is excellent, as is Ed Norton. Worth a watch.

I can usually watch a film completely to see if it gets better; a good example is Shutter Island. That reveals itself to be a good film at the end.

This may be the same, only I will never know as I had to press 'stop' on 45 minutes as it was sooooooo boring my wife fell asleep and I started browsing the internet.

Utter rubbish from such a great cast.

Absolute shocker expected alot better from such a good cast. Only exciting part was seeing Milla's naked on what must be described as drab and boring

I liked it. It lacks additional explanation/elements, which would help to embrace the conflict within each character, but it seems as if it was premeditated, as if the plot was meant to balance between the holywood-ish con and the fractions of enlightment, which Stone seemed to be experiencing.

The movie shows how hypocrytical the society is, and what is really necessary to come clean before oneself, regardless of the context in which one found himself.

Lets face it this was badly scripted and appallingly cast. Try as he might (and why would he?) Bob de Nira cannot play the innocent dupe - he has far too much screen presence. Edward Norton runs his well trodden path of psycho-con but his transition into born again evangelical after the 'epiphany' of revelling in his closeness to an inmate being violently murdered is wooden and, frankly, well below par for his talent. Ms Jovovich is her usual pointless self playing a male fantasy cliche of a vampy teacher willing to go to any lengths for her man. Turgid, uninvolved and unworthy. I hope they enjoyed the payday.
