Highly enjoyableBy blunderwood from East Sussex , 10 May 2004
[Highly rated reviewer]The combined filmmaking efforts of James Cameron (screenplay) and his then wife Kathryn Bigelow ensure that this film is at least going to have a touch of class. But it has that in bucket loads.
Its 31st December 1999 and while the world prepares for the party of the millennium and the end of the world, Larry Nero, played here very well by Ralph Fiennes, trades in the seedy underworld of clips, direct recordings from someone's brain of the experience theyre having, a 100% total sensory immersion to be played back on a headset called a squid.
Extremely William Gibson and commendably so, including a fantastic cast with Juilliette Lewis and Angela Bassett, they take the possibilities of this idea to its enormous and disturbing possibilities. And thats before the police turn up.
Brace yourselves for a bumpy ride, and hang on tight. Everything gets thrown into the mix here and no punches are pulled.
The result is excellent. Make sure you watch this film.

Many things at the same timeBy Epona (102 reviews) from Britain , 07 Sep 2013True, this is a bit of a mix up. You've got romance with daft Fiennes missing how his best friend feels about him. Bits of comedy. Seediness and fighting. Ravey nightclubs. Car chases. Deeply unpleasant rapes and murders. Vaguely philosophical thoughts about what virtual reality means. Etc. But overall I found it deeply enjoyable and rather nostalgic. Fiennes and Bassett make a good effort on the sometimes stilted script. And it's very action packed. If you like 90s dingey cyberpunkish things, you will like this.

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHideA lot more nudity than I remembered, but still a decent plot driven sci-fi thriller with credible villains and an antihero so feeble that it could go either way.
Strange premise for a film...By twosoddingcats (269 reviews) from Kingston-upon-Thames , 13 Aug 2012...so you put on a device, and it lets you watch other peoples lives ....like a movie...how they are feeling.....I added this to my rental list as I have a secret crush on Ralph Fiennes [I never buy his American accents], but what saves this movie is the direction by Kathryn Bigelow; she knows how to do action movies....if you like the sci-fi idea in the script, you might like this.
OK and worth watching if you like that kind of thingBy bolshie (12 reviews) , 13 Jul 2012This is one of those films where the sum of the parts: interesting ideas for the theme, some decent set piece scenes and intermittently powerful performances by some big names (take a special bow Juliette Lewis for pulling off the tricky female rock star role) comes to less than the whole.
Although it scores quite highly as mindless entertainment it is hard to avoid the feeling that this film amounts to a missed opportunity. It is interesting that many of those involved with this film later climbed higher peaks; perhaps lessons were learned.
