It's hard to say why this b/w film is so engaging: the characters are neither charming nor charmless. Perhaps it's the sense that so much is unknown, & anything could happen, which it does....
Eva comes to New York from Budapest, & has to stay with her cousin 'Willie' for ten days while Aunt Lotte is in hospital in Cleveland. She proves to be no trouble, & an adept shoplifter when they're broke. Willie & his friend Eddie start to like her a little by the time she moves on. A year later, Willie & Eddie make some money at cards, & head to Cleveland visiting; Eva is sick of her job, snowy Cleveland, & Aunt's rules, so the three of them head off to Florida for sunshine, hoping to make more money at the races, when a coincidence changes their lives.
